An Ambitious Club

Manny Smith was lured to Meadow Lane by Keith Curle's vision for the club...

It was Notts County’s desire to reach the Championship that led to Manny Smith signing a two-year deal at Meadow Lane.

The powerful centre-back was offered a new contract by his former club Walsall and had a number of sides lining up to secure his services.

But following talks with Notts boss Keith Curle, the 23-year-old decided that the Magpies were the team for him.

Smith took part in his first training session as a County player on Tuesday and is looking forward to the campaign ahead.

“I’m very pleased to be here, it’s a big club that’s very ambitious,” he told Magpie Player.

“There were a few options for me in the summer but the gaffer here showed great interest in me.

“I met and sat down with him a few times and he was very keen on me and taking the club forward.

“The club’s very ambitious, there’s a good stadium and good crowds, good players and the team finished just below the Play-Offs last season.

“I think next season we can kick on and get higher.”

Smith has been handed the number five jersey for the 2012.13 campaign and he is determined to show that he deserves to be a first-choice centre-back throughout pre-season.

“Being given a good number upon coming into the club, I’ve just got to get my head down, train well and get fit,” he continued.

“I’ve got to work on getting into the team and then cement my place.

“With Walsall being the first home game it could be very interesting and it’s something I’m looking forward to.”
