Iwelumo: Magpies Have Blend For Success

13 December 2012

Chris Iwelumo believes that the Notts County squad has what it takes to achieve promotion this season.

Iwelumo has experienced a climb into Championship in the past, having played a pivotal part in Colchester’s 2005.06 promotion campaign, where they finished runners-up to Southend United.

The striker, who is currently on loan from Watford, scored 19 goals that season and hopes to start firing home the goals in the black and white stripes.

Iwelumo sees similarities to that successful U’s side in the County camp, with a good blend of talent and togetherness.

“It was down to team spirit that season and I had a good partnership with Jamie Cureton - it just worked,” he told the club’s matchbook, #themag, ahead of this weekend’s Meadow Lane clash with Brentford.

“The season we got promoted from League 1, we only used something like 19 players.

“It was such a small squad, everyone just stayed fit and it was one of those things that was just so united.

“That can take you so far but you’ve got to have the ability as well.

“We’ve got that in abundance here and I’m excited about it all.

“There’s a really good standard and they train well, which is very important.

"There’s great competition here and it brings out the best in everyone.

“It’s been a while since I’ve been in League 1, but I’ve scored a lot of goals in this division so hopefully that can continue here.”
