The taste of defeat is bitter and something that the Magpies do not want to experience again any time soon, says first team manager Keith Curle.

Last weekend Notts were knocked out of the Capital One Cup by Bradford City courtesy of an extra time winner.

In anticipation of the npower League 1 opener with Crewe Alexandra on Saturday training has stepped up a notch.

The players not only want to earn a spot on the starting 11, they want to prove that Saturday’s result was a one-off.

“The whole build-up of this week is that the season starts now,” said Curle on Magpie Player.

“I’m not saying we weren’t disappointed about losing the cup game, because we were, and I think we created enough chances in that game to have won it.

“We’ve taken it on board that it was a defeat and we didn’t like it, but the league campaign starts now.

“The focus has been there from the players, even to the extent of the intensity in training, because the players don’t know the starting 11.

“They’re all vying for those slots because everyone wants to kick-off the season in the team, which is good.

“There’s no hierarchy at the football club, yes we’ve got a small squad but it’s a very capable squad, and everybody in that squad is able to play.”
