Report: Harrogate 3-1 Notts

Jones free-kick not enough

16 December 2023

A stunning Jodi Jones free-kick proved to be a mere consolation as Harrogate Town ran out winners in North Yorkshire.

Jones halved the deficit after we’d gone into the break two goals behind following strikes from George Thomson and Abraham Odoh.

But, after Macaulay Langstaff and Crowley had seen efforts blocked seconds after the restart, our hosts broke on us and scored again through Matty Daly.

Luke Williams was forced into three changes as Kyle Cameron, Lewis Macari and David McGoldrick missed out through injury.

That meant goalkeeper Aidan Stone was protected by a back three of Adam Chicksen, Aden Baldwin and Richard Brindley.

There was familiarity out wide, with Jodi Jones and Aaron Nemane keeping their places, while Jim O’Brien was given the nod to play alongside John Bostock in support of attack-minded trio Sam Austin, Dan Crowley and stand-in skipper Macaulay Langstaff.

We were to experience a nightmare start to the match, though, as moments after Jack Muldoon had sent a shot over on the stretch, we went behind as Thomson produced an outstanding first-time finish to convert a low cross from the left.

Jones saw a fierce shot well held by emergency loan signing James Belshaw as we sought a quick equaliser, with Abraham Odoh responding with a curling shot which went comfortably wide of Stone’s post.

But the keeper was beaten on 32 minutes when he was only able to parry Daly’s shot, allowing Udoh to tap the loose ball home from close range.

Belshaw got his fingertip to a Langstaff effort shortly afterwards, nudging the ball just wide, moments before Thomson whipped a shot just wide of the far post.

There were no changes at the break but, shortly after O’Brien, Chicksen and Baldwin had been booked for fouls and Anthony O’Connor had hooked a shot over the bar, Williams sent Tobi Adebayo on for Bostock.

And, seven minutes later, we had a route back into the game when Jones drew a poor challenge 20 yards out and stood over the resultant free-kick, delightfully whipping the ball into the top corner.

Chaos ensued after the restart with both Langstaff and Crowley having shots blocked inside the area – but that proved to be the catalyst for our hosts to break away and eventually supply a low cross for Daly, who produced a delicate flick to send the ball into the bottom corner.

Dean Cornelius broke the offside trap and blasted a shot straight at Stone in what proved to be the final attacking of note on a disappointing day in Yorkshire.
