Woking 2-3 Notts

Rodrigues and Scott (2) make it four wins on the spin!

8 October 2022

A Ruben Rodrigues penalty and two Cedwyn Scott goals were enough to keep us top of the table and extend our winning run to four matches.

The Portuguese opened the scoring with a penalty before Scott's close-range finish doubled our lead.

Woking halved the deficit when Sam Slocombe's attempted pass cannoned off James Daly and into his own net.

But another Scott effort from inside the area made sure of the points, despite Reece Grego-Cox's late penalty.

With Jim O’Brien out injured, Geraldo Bajrami’s inclusion in the starting XI was our only change from the side that beat Wrexham in midweek.

The hosts started the brighter of the two teams and, shortly after Padraig Amond had seen a shot diverted into the side-netting, Rodrigues went into the book for a foul as the Cardinals tried to break away once again.

We were given a golden opportunity to take the lead on nine minutes, however, when Adam Chicksen burst into the box and was tripped by a home defender. Rodrigues took charge of the spotkick and coolly slotted it home.

Woking responded immediately and forced Slocombe into an important intervention as he raced off his line to beat a forward to the ball. Moments later, the keeper had Bajrami to thank for a clearance off the line.

The hosts could consider themselves a little unfortunate to be a goal behind, but their woes were worsened on 14 minutes as we doubled our lead.

It came courtesy of more excellent play from Chicksen, who brilliantly beat his man in the area and saw his low, drilled cross turned home by Scott.

Despite being buoyed by our two-goal lead, however, we were struggling to get our usual game together and conceded sloppily on 31 minutes as a ponderous string of passes resulted in Slocombe’s attempted offload to Brindley cannoning back off Daly and into his own net.

But we made amends shortly before half-time as a defender presented Scott with the ball 30 yards out. A scrappy attack involving Scott, Langstaff and Rodrigues followed and the ball eventually presented itself to the former eight yards out and he was able to apply the simple finish.

We emerged for the second half unchanged and soon managed to gain far more control of the game.

On the hour, Bajrami’s excellent switch to Nemane resulted in Langstaff’s deflected left-footed effort going just over the bar.

Seven minutes later we had a big chance for our fourth but Scott delayed his lay-off to Langstaff too long and the latter’s shot was blocked.

And moments later another huge opportunity presented itself when Nemane headed the ball down for Rodrigues, who could only skew his half-volley wide.

Langstaff made way for Kairo Mitchell in our first change of the afternoon and that was soon to be followed by Scott departing for Sam Austin and Matt Palmer being replaced by Quevin Castro.

Woking had failed to pose any problems whatsoever in the second half but had a lifeline with four minutes to play when the referee spotted a handball in the area as we tried to clear a set-piece. Grego-Cox found the net to set up a nervy finale.

But, despite five added minutes, we saw the game out comfortably to keep our place on top of the table.
