Preview: Swindon (H)

12 September 2017

Notts County host Swindon Town tonight looking to cement their spot in the automatic promotion places of the Sky Bet League Two table.

The Magpies moved into the top three on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 win over Morecambe at Meadow Lane and will look to extend their unbeaten run to seven games tonight.

But Swindon arrive in Nottingham boasting a perfect record on the road with three wins from three away trips, including an eye-catching 3-0 win at Luton on Saturday.

The Robins moved level on points with the play-off places with that victory and could leapfrog Notts with another win.

However, Kevin Nolan's side are protecting an unbeaten home record in 2017-18 and will not allow that record to be blemished easily.

Notts boss Nolan says...

"Swindon have won their last two games away from home so they will fancy themselves.

"They play good stuff and have good players so we have to make sure we respect them.

"It will be a tough ask but we are at home and we are expected to win."

Swindon manager David Flitcroft says...

"Away from home, we have a solid structure, discipline and a willingness to work harder than the other team.

"The lads put in a hell of a shift to claim that result [3-0 at Luton] so we have to see who can go again and who can perform.

"They have worked so hard out of shape and possession and we will look at that with a view to getting ready to go again."

Team news

Striker Jonathan Forte could be in line for a start after scoring off the bench during the weekend's 2-0 win over Morecambe. The man he replaced, Shola Ameobi, is likely to miss out with the hamstring injury which forced him to limp off.

Nolan has an otherwise fully-fit squad to pick from.

Dangerman

Kaiyne Woolery was Swindon's big signing of the summer, costing the Robins £350,000 when they acquired his services from Wigan Athletic.

The pacy forward, who failed to find the net in five appearances during a loan spell at Meadow Lane in 2015, spent the second half of last season on loan at Forest Green Rovers, scoring four goals in 19 games.

Two of those goals, crucially, came in the National League play-off final against Tranmere Rovers. The striker opened and rounded off the scoring in the match as the Stroud outfit were promoted to the EFL for the first time in their history.

His form for the vegan club led to widespread interest and, when Wigan made it clear he was available for transfer, Rovers boss Mark Cooper, who used to manage Swindon, tried his best to take the striker back to The New Lawn.

But the 22-year-old opted to make the County Ground his next destination, saying: "I got a promotion last year and I came here to get another one."

We've met before...

Notts have a decent record against the Robins, losing just one of the last six meetings between the sides at Meadow Lane.

The last home win against Swindon came in April 2014 when Alan Sheehan and Callum McGregor were on target. Troy Archibald-Henville and Nathan Thompson both saw red for the visitors.

The most recent meeting between the sides in Nottingham ended 3-0 to Town. Liam Noble was sent off for Shaun Derry's side as a brace from Andy Williams and a strike by Massimo Luongo meant the three points went back to Wiltshire.

What are the odds?

Sky Bet have priced Notts up as 11/10 favourites to pick up a fourth straight win with the visitors seen as the outsiders at 12/5 and the draw at 5/2.

Both of Notts' home wins in Sky Bet League Two have been by a 2-0 scoreline and a repeat can be backed at 9/1.

Jonathan Forte staked his claim for a regular starting berth with another goal from the bench at the weekend and could be in line for a start against the Wiltshire side. The striker is available at 5/1 to score the first goal of the game or 17/2 to score a brace.

Defender Dan Jones got off the mark with a stunning free-kick during the victory over Morecambe and is available at 50/1 to open the scoring again against the Robins.

Notts winning to-nil is 3/1, while a Magpies win with both teams scoring is available at 11/4. A goal-laden game with both teams scoring in both halves is 12/1.

Notts 1-0 Swindon

Stead penalty wins it for Notts

12 September 2017

Notts County recorded a hat-trick of wins and clean sheets with a 1-0 victory over Swindon Town at Meadow Lane.

A first-half Jon Stead penalty was enough to give the Magpies all three points on a wet and windy autumn evening.

Kevin Nolan made five changes to the team that beat Morecambe 2-0 on Saturday.

In came Carl Dickinson, Matt Tootle, Rob Milsom, Lewis Alessandra and Jonathan Forte, replacing Dan Jones, Nicky Hunt, Elliott Hewitt, Jorge Grant and the injured Shola Ameobi.

The first big chance of the first half fell to the visitors when Matty Taylor picked out Luke Norris with a cross to the back post. Diving to meet the ball, Norris could only guide it wide.

Notts' response came from Alessandra, who drove the ball narrowly off-target from 20 yards shortly before Notts came within inches of taking the lead.

Ryan Yates was fouled just outside the 'D' and Dickinson took responsbility for the subsequent free-kick. He deftly guided the ball around the wall but, with the Swindon keeper stranded, it clipped the outside of the post and went behind.

Stead volleyed Tootle's cross wide and Swindon's Paul Mullin shot straight at Adam Collin as the sides sought the opening goal.

But it was Notts who claimed it when, after Stead had been hauled down in the area, the forward picked himself up to smash the resultant spotkick into the bottom-left corner.

1-0 was how it stayed going into the break and Notts reemerged unchanged, Alessandra seeing a shot blocked by Olly Lancashire shortly after the restart.

The sides continued to trade tentative blows until the 58th minute, when visiting keeper Lawrence Vigouroux made a stunning low save to divert Forte's header out for a corner.

Stead headed the ball over from Terry Hawkridge's cross, Alessandra saw a shot deflected over after neat play between Hawkridge and Stead and Taylor's 30-yard piledriver took a nick off a Notts man on its way out for a corner as both sides sought the game's next goal.

Alessandra had another opportunity on 76 minutes, controlling Stead's cut back brilliantly on a skiddy surface but seeing his hurried finish blocked by a defender.

Nolan's first substitution saw Grant replace Hawkridge down the right as the game entered its final quarter of an hour.

And the Magpies had Collin to thank for preserving their lead with seven minutes to go when he instinctively kept out Harry Smith's header from a corner.

Elliott Hewitt replaced Alessandra and Alan Smith came on for Stead shortly after four minutes of added time were indicated.

It was a nervy finale as Swindon piled forward, Kellan Gordon smashing the post after a free-kick fell at his feet in the area.

But Notts held firm to claim the victory their tremendous all-round display deserved.
