Chesterfield (A)

24 March 2018

Notts County make the short trip to Chesterfield looking to stick with the pacesetters for the automatic promotion places in Sky Bet League Two.

With the Magpies not playing until Sunday in front of the Sky Sports cameras, the likes of Luton, Wycombe, Mansfield and Exeter have an opportunity to put the pressure on with positive results on Saturday afternoon.

However, County are in good form having taken eight points from their last four league outings and their most recent trip away from Meadow Lane, a 2-1 win at Forest Green Rovers, brought a first victory on the road since Boxing Day.

Chesterfield, meanwhile, are in need of victory for very different reasons.

The Spireites are six points adrift of safety before the weekend's action and not even the appointment of club legend Jack Lester has been able to see them clamber away from trouble.

But they have taken the scalps of Luton Town and Swindon Town on their own turf since the turn of the year so the Magpies will have to be wary of falling foul of another upset.

Notts boss Kevin Nolan says...

"Chesterfield have had some good results and beaten some good sides," he said.

"They have been unfortunate in a number of games we have looked back on and they play some really good stuff.

"They're fighting for their league status and will do everything they can to make sure they don't go down so I am expecting a tough game."

Chesterfield manager Jack Lester says...

"Notts County are a good side, they have a lot of experience and look to get their front players involved as much as they can.

“There’s something about playing in a game that’s live on TV. I hope the players are excited about it.”

Team news

Notts will be without defender Ben Hall and midfielder Liam Walker, who are both away on international duty with Northern Ireland and Gibraltar respectively.

The hosts, meanwhile, are boosted by the return of midfielder Louis Reed but the game comes too soon for veteran defender Ian Evatt to take part.

Dangerman

Kristian Dennis is key to the Spireites' hopes of staying in the EFL and has been their main source of goals this season.

With 15 goals in Sky Bet League Two, the striker has accounted for 40% of the Derbyshire side's tally.

It is a similar tale to last season, when the frontman bagged 10 in 42 games but could not prevent relegation from League One.

The 28-year-old almost left the Proact Stadium on deadline day in January with a move to Bradford City all-but-confirmed.

However, the deal fell through and, with it, Chesterfield's chances of survival increased exponentially.

We've met before...

Notts' last visit to the Proact Stadium came in September 2014 when strikes from Blair Adams and Georg Margreitter meant the points were shared.

October 2011 was when County last won away to the Spireites thanks to an own goal from Drew Talbot to go with earlier efforts from Ben Burgess and Alan Judge.

The previous meeting between the sides earlier in the season saw the Magpies register their first win of the season thanks to Jorge Grant's brace.

What are the odds?

Sky Bet have priced Notts up as 11/10 favourites to pick up a second consecutive away win with the hosts rated at 12/5 and the draw 23/10.

The Magpies are 17/2 to win 2-0, as they did in the reverse fixture, or a goal-laden 4-2 victory is available at an enticing 66/1. Alternatively, Notts to win 3-1 is 16/1.

Jorge Grant proved to be the matchwinner when the teams met back in August and the midfielder scoring first in another 2-0 win for County is 25/1 in the scorecast market.

Notts are 28/1 to come from behind at half-time and win the game, 10/3 to win with both teams scoring in the game or 5/2 to win and keep a clean sheet at the Proact.

Match Reports

Chesterfield 3-1 Notts

25 March 2018

Notts County were beaten 3-1 by Chesterfield at the Proact Stadium.

The hosts took a two-goal lead into the break thanks to Sid Nelson and Zavon Hines before Dan Jones came off the bench late in the second half and marked his return to his former club with a goal from a free-kick.

But it wasn’t to be for Notts, who conceded a penalty deep into stoppage time and saw Krystian Dennis wrap the game up from the spot.

Kevin Nolan was forced to make one change to the side that drew with Mansfield Town last weekend.

Ben Hall, away with Northern Ireland Under 21s, was replaced by Shaun Brisley in the heart of defence.

And, shortly after Louis Reed had seen a 25-yard shot blocked, Brisley nearly gave Notts the lead when he sent a looping header goalwards. Home keeper Aaron Ramsdale backpedalled to tip the ball over the bar.

There was nothing Ramsdale’s opposite number, Adam Collin, could do on 16 minutes however when Nelson’s bundled finish from a corner gave the Spireites the lead.

After play resumed, Richard Duffy made a good interception to prevent Dennis being played in before Shola Ameobi almost benefited from a lucky bounce only to see the ball reach Ramsdale’s grateful grasp.

It had been a sub-par first half from the Magpies but they created a golden opportunity to equalise seven minutes before the break when Jon Stead curled a dangerous cross into the middle. Elliott Hewitt timed his run perfectly to meet the ball eight yards out but could only nod it wide.

And, a minute later, Notts were punished not only for that missed opportunity but also for a botched clearance which cleared the path for Hines to fire the ball beyond Collin from inside the area.

Hines looked to add a third shortly before the interval, twisting and turning his way past Matt Tootle before sending the ball over the bar from a narrow angle.

2-0 was how it stayed going into the break but, shortly after play resumed, Hines once again came close to extending his side’s lead when he fired the ball into the side-netting on the pivot.

Alex Whitmore headed wide from a corner as the hosts continued to assert their authority, although Notts had a half-chance on 50 minutes when, with Spirites keeper Ramsdale floored in the area, Terry Hawkridge’s lob into the dangerzone was dealt with by the panicked Spireites defence.

That was to be Hawkridge’s final contribution as he was replaced by Lewis Alessandra three minutes later.

Notts’ next chance soon followed, Jorge Grant dinking the ball over for Stead to run on to. The forward held off his marker to give himself a tricky shooting chance but could only spoon the ball high and wide with his weaker left foot.

Stead’s name was taken shortly after the hour for a late tackle on Nelson which sparked a brief spell of handbags between both sets of players.

Andy Kellett fired the ball over from the edge of the area before Nelson needed lengthy treatment following another collision with a Notts man. He was deemed fit to continue.

Nolan’s next change came on 72 minutes when Matty Virtue replaced Liam Noble in central midfield. Jones replaced Carl Dickinson nine minutes later.

Time was running out for Notts, who won a free-kick down the right when Ameobi was scythed down by Whitmore, who was booked.

Jones took charge, whipping the ball towards the far post. The ball sailed over everyone and into the far corner, throwing Notts a lifeline.

Chesterfield came within inches of immediately regaining their lead when Krystian Dennis’ deflected effort bobbled just past the post.

Moments later, Collin made a tremendous reflex save to keep Hines’ header out before the Spireites created another chance which resulted in Kellett firing the ball into the side-netting.

Nine minutes were added on at the end of the match but there was to be no happy ending for the Magpies, as Tootle brought Kellett down in the area to give Dennis the opportunity to finish the game off from 12 yards.

The forward did just that, ensuring the game ended 3-1 to the hosts.

Subsidised travel

The club will be subsidising coach travel for supporters attending the match against Chesterfield on Sunday 25 March (kick-off 1.30pm).

The game will be televised live on Sky Sports and chairman Alan Hardy is keen to help as many Notts fans attend as possible.

“Our away support has been nothing short of magnificent this season,” said Alan.

“This is another way of us showing our gratitude to those who follow us up and down the land.

“I’m fully aware that away-day costs are high and I’m conscious that some of our supporters would struggle to justify the expense of attending this game when they can watch it on television.

“Hopefully, by heavily subsidising travel for this match, fans who would otherwise be unable to attend can now be with us to cheer us on for what will be yet another very important fixture.”

Official club travel is priced only £5 for all Notts supporters.

The buses will depart from near the club shop on Meadow Lane at 11.30am.
