Central League Cup: Notts 3-1 Rotherham

Reserves record comfortable win

11 December 2018

Notts County beat Rotherham United 3-1 in the Central League Cup on Tuesday afternoon.

Steve Chettle's side featured a blend of youth and experience and made it two wins from two in the competition thanks to goals from Kion Etete, Noor Husin and Sam Osborne.

The visitors had drawn level following a goalmouth scramble early in the second half but the parity was short-lived and the Magpies ran out comfortable winners after a polished performance.

Notts started on the front foot but struggled to create a clear-cut opening until the tenth minute.

Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain, who had been involved in most attacks, surged past a couple of defenders to the byline and pulled back for Etete to drive confidently past visiting keeper Charlie Farrar.

Husin had an excellent chance to double the lead when Osborne’s tenacity and guile in the box allowed him to lay it on a plate for the Afghanistan international but he blazed over.

The winger turned provider again moments later – crossing for an unmarked Corey Bucalossi at the back post but he didn't keep his header down.

Notts continued to work the ball into excellent positions and Osborne had a chance to add a second just before the break but his goalbound shot was well blocked at the back post.

Early in the second half, Magpies’ goalkeeper Tiernan Brooks was called into action for the first time – turning Mitchell Carlton’s free-kick over the bar.

Bucalossi had another chance to get himself on the scoresheet moments later when Etete squared for him but the ball ran wider than he'd have liked and he couldn’t divert his shot on target under pressure.

Osborne could have doubled the advantage as Notts continued on the front foot but he took too long to get his shot off when he found space in the box and Rotherham eventually cleared.

And Chettle’s side were made to pay for their spurned chances - Brooks’ punch from a corner ricocheting in favour of the visitors who scrambled the ball home.

The lead was quickly restored, however, when Tyreece Kennedy-Williams got forward from left back to send a dangerous low ball into the box which Husin controlled before slotting past Farrar.

Andy Kellett saw a volley well saved before setting up Notts’ third – swinging in a corner which Osborne headed home from six yards.

The Magpies continued to threaten and Oxlade-Chamberlain's cleared cross dropped for Owen Betts whose volley from the edge of the box had the Rotherham keeper scrambling but it drifted the wrong side of the post.

Osborne almost doubled his tally with another headed chance - this time looping one over after Pierce Bird whipped a dangeous ball in from the left.

The winger went close again moments later, forcing Farrar into a good save after Kellett cut the ball back from the byline.

Bird had a sight of goal himself following a corner. Excellent play between Husin and Kellett led to the centre back receiving the ball in space inside the area but he saw his shot saved.

Husin's deflected effort from range looked like it might loop in but it fell kindly for the visiting keeper in the last action before the final whistle was blown.

Notts: Brooks, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kennedy-Williams, Ramirez, Betts, Bird, Husin (C), Bucalossi, Etete, Osborne, Kellett
