Equivalent to three A-Levels, our BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport provides you with the opportunity to work towards a vocational qualification for a career in the sport industry or to study further at university. Our fully qualified tutors and FA licensed coaches combine innovative classroom learning, expert coaching and training opportunities, and the chance to potentially represent Notts County FC in regional leagues.

The BTEC National in Sport is a specialist work related course developed to cover the core elements of sporting performance and excellence such as Anatomy, Physiology, Psychology, Coaching, Analysis and Technical and Tactical Development. This course particularly suits those wanting to enter employment in the sport and active leisure sector as sports coaches, instructors and leaders and for those wishing to progress to higher education to study a sport related degree such as coaching, sports development and sports science. 

Entry requirements

Must be aged 16 to 18 years old.

Minimum of 4 GCSE grades 9-4 (equivalent to A-C).

Where can I study?

Notts County Football in the Community provide the opportunity to study for their BTEC at our facilities around Meadow Lane. With access to state of the art classroom and gym equipment at our Portland Centre, this city centre location close to the Notts County FC ground is the perfect base for those with a keen interest in football

What units will I study?

  • Principles of anatomy and physiology in sport: The aim of this unit is to explore the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems and also to learn the fundamentals of the energy systems.
  • The physiology of fitness: This unit provides an opportunity for learners to explore the body’s response to acute exercise and how the body adapts to long-term exercise participation.
  • Assessing risk in sport: The aim of this unit is to make the learner explicitly aware of the vital nature of risk assessment and its management within the sports industry.
  • Fitness training and programming: The aim of this unit is for learners to be able to plan fitness training sessions and design fitness training programmes.
  • Sports coaching: The aim of this unit is to develop a learner’s understanding and knowledge of the roles, responsibilities, skills and techniques of a sports coach and how to apply them whilst coaching and/or leading sports sessions.
  • Fitness testing for sports and exercise: The aim of this unit is to enable learners to gain an understanding of fitness testing and the importance of health screening and health monitoring tests.
  • Sports nutrition: The aim of this unit is to provide a broad understanding of the importance of nutrition and hydration to a variety of sports participants.
  • Current issues in sport: This unit examines how sport has evolved in the context of wider society, with the focus on the British experience.
  • Exercise, health and lifestyle: This unit gives learners the knowledge and skills to assess the lifestyle of an individual, provide advice on lifestyle improvement and plan a health-related physical activity programme.
  • Instructing physical activity and exercise: The unit requires learners to design a six-week exercise programme for two contrasting clients and then plan and deliver a safe and effective exercise session.
  • Psychology for sports performance: The aim of this unit is to develop learners’ understanding of the psychological dimensions of sport and develop techniques to improve sporting performance.
  • Sports injuries: The aim of this unit is to provide learners with an overview of injury prevention, identification and basic treatment. The unit also explores differing rehabilitatory interventions for common sports injuries.
  • Work experience in sport: The aim of this unit is to provide learners with the skills needed to undertake a work experience placement in the sports industry.
  • Sport as a business: This unit will enable learners to explore aspects of business in sport and enable them to conduct and use market research.
  • Profiling sports performance: This unit enables the learner to explore the role and function of performance profiling in sport and the application of profiling to the design, monitoring and evaluation of a sports performance action plan.
  • Rules, regulations and officiating in sport: The aim of this unit is to enable learners to apply rules and regulations and to officiate in a selected sport.
  • Organising sports events: This unit will enable learners to plan, deliver and review a sports event.
  • Talent identification and development in sport: The aim of this unit is to provide learners with an understanding of the different predictors of talent and the ways of developing talent.
  • Technical and tactical skills in sport: The aim of this unit is to enable learners to assess their own and others’ technical and tactical skills, and plan their own development.
  • The athlete’s lifestyle: The aim of this unit is for learners to develop an understanding of the lifestyle factors that can affect athletic performance.

The Extended National Diploma course combines academic units and practical experiences. Students will be guided and supported by experienced staff and a range of activities and sports related qualifications will enhance the course.


The BTEC qualifications in Sport have been developed to meet employment opportunities in the sport and active leisure sector and to give full-time learners the opportunity to enter employment in this sector or to progress to higher education. In particular the course prepares students for employment or further education in sports coaching, physical education, fitness instruction, sports development leisure management, and sport and exercise science. Progression onto higher education in sports related degrees is an extremely common pathway for sports students.

Additional Information

Students completing this course will initially be registered for the 90 Credit Diploma. Following successful completion of year 1, students will continue to complete the full Extended Diploma qualification.
