We would like to pass on our congratulations to Nottingham-based football club Sherwood FC, who are celebrating this week after being awarded one of the top accolades in grassroots football - the national FA Charter Standard Development Club of the Year for England.

As part of their award, the club has now been invited to send a party of 25 to Wembley Stadium on Sunday, August 8 when Chelsea play Manchester United in the FA Community Shield.

"It's an incredible honour for Sherwood FC to be given this award, it's got the whole club buzzing," said Chairman Simon Buttenshaw.

"To be recognised nationally out of all the thousands of clubs in the country has really blown us all away."

Sherwood have also pro-actively contributed to the 'Kick It Out Campaign' - football's annual campaign to rid the game of racism.

Notts County were approached with the idea of allowing players from Sherwood and local rivals AFC Vernon to lead the teams out before a home match in October.

Seeing two ethnically diverse teams parade around the ground with the 'Kick it Out' banners sent a strong campaign message and was a proud moment for officials from the two clubs.

Not only that, it has helped forge a strong and friendly link off the field between two teams who are fiercely competitive when they face each other in a match!
