Notts County Youth Team were beaten 4-1 this morning away at Chesterfield.

Although the young Magpies looked battled hard, it was an inability to defend from set pieces that cost the team.

The hosts took the lead in the first half, following a mix-up at the back, despite an initial save from goalkeeper Liam Mitchell.

Their second came after the break from a corner, where again Notts failed to clear.

The game was over when Chesterfield smashed in a third - a stunning 35-yard volley into the top corner.

Josh Marshall pulled one back for County, latching onto a Greg Tempest corner, but another neat finish in stoppage time from the Spireites re-established the deficit.

Youth Team Coach Michael Johnson was encouraged by his team's showing but feels that they need to work on defending from dead ball situations.

He explained: "It was the same story again, we played all right but conceded from set-pieces.

"We played some nice football but we're lacking potency in both boxes.

"Next week we'll be on the training ground working at it until we get it nailed down.

"We've got to put the work in because we've got York City next weekend - a team that beat us 7-0 last season."

Notts will take on York at the Highfields training ground at 11am on Sunday, September 4.
