He turned down a new contract at Nottingham Forest and also the opportunity to join Bradford City in favour of a move to Meadow Lane after catching Steve Thompson's eye last season.
After waiting in the wings at Forest for too long for his own liking, he opted for a fresh start in a bid to secure first-team football at Meadow Lane.
Last season he spent time out on loan at Macclesfield, Lincoln and Bradford, scoring nine times in total including one well-taken goal against the Magpies in Notts' 3-1 win over Lincoln in January.
Spencer has a good pedigree and is a player Steve Thompson was delighted to snap up to enhance his striking options going into the new season.
