Thompson joined Notts County on a month's loan from League One side Oldham Athletic in October 2008.
This was then extended until January 2009 after an impressive start to life at Meadow Lane.
To the delight of Magpies supporters the former Nottingham Forest man's contract was made permanent in January 2009 following his release by Oldham.
Shortly after joining the club the Irish centre-back, who can also operate in the midfield in addition to right-back, was issued the captain's armband.
He has continued to skipper the team into the 2009/10 season.
