Former fans' favourite Mark Stallard has backed Lee Hughes to recreate his goal-scoring form in League 1 this term.

Stallard was no stranger to getting his name on the scoresheet in the black and white stripes either.

He turned out for the club on 201 occasions overall, tucking away 69 goals.

Now a financial advisor, the retired forward, most fondly remembered for his stylish hold-up play and clinical finishing, believes Hughes is one of the division's most feared frontmen.

However, he is all too aware from his time as a player that such reputations cannot be built up without the service.

"30-odd goals speaks for itself, that's fantastic in any league, because you've still got to put the ball in the back of the net," explained Stallard.

"It's the hardest part of the game and sometimes some of us made it harder than others.

"He'll be the first one to say that it's about the team creating chances for him.

"If people don't put the ball in the right areas, you aren't going to score a goal, no matter who you are.

"It's about getting the right blend and getting the players playing together, and then building on the success from last year."
