Schmeichel's farewell

Posted on: Wed 12 May 2010

Kasper Schmeichel will look back on his season at Notts County fondly, after his contract was officially concluded on Tuesday.

Schmeichel joined Notts County on a five-year contract in August 2009 as one of the major signings attracted to the club by Sven-Goran Eriksson under the previous owners.

However, despite a string of fine performances throughout this season and the club's desire to retain the player's services, it was decided that the best deal for all parties was to agree a cancellation of the highly-rated young goalkeeper's contract.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed his time at Meadow Lane and even played a pivotal part in setting a new club record for clean sheets in a season.

He reflected upon an eventful 10 months following his final match against Torquay.

"We have had an amazing season and the lads have played out of their skins all season," he said.

"I have enjoyed every minute and I will miss the place, because I have made some great friends here.

"The people, the teammates are absolutely amazing, I have never played with a team with such spirit.

"We talked about it on Friday at dinner, nobody had played in a squad where the spirit is as good as it is here."

As for his future, the stopper is keeping his options open and is planning to take a hard-earned break before making a decision.

He explained: "It's been a long season, I'm going to go away, take a couple of weeks rest and see what happens really.

"People still have games to go, most have finished now, but we will take it from there when the time comes.

"I would like to stay in England but I would have no problem going abroad - this is abroad for me - but I would have no problem going on the continent.

"There a few clubs where I would consider going for an education, maybe not playing as much, but learning from an experienced goalkeeper.

"But they are only a select few clubs so we will see what offers come in, if any, and take it from there."
