Birthday wishes

Posted on: Fri 12 Mar 2010

Everyone at Notts County Football Club would like to wish Derek Pavis a happy 80th birthday today.

The Nottingham born businessman has been heavily involved with the World's Oldest Football League Club ever since he became chairman in the summer of 1987.

Although he sold the club in 2002, he was appointed life president as recognition for of all of his work here at Meadow Lane.

Chief executive Jim Rodwell explained that he is still a figure of support in the present day.

He explained: "Since the first day we walked in here, Derek has been a tremendous help and support to us and we look forward to working with him for many years to come.

"Hopefully Derek will enjoy the day at Meadow Lane, the stadium which he helped to build, with a win against Bournemouth on Monday night."

Derek's first season as chairman saw the club reach the play-offs, as they finished fourth in Division Three.

In 1990 Derek, with Neil Warnock as his manager, helped the club to reach a Wembley final for the first time ever, which ended in a 2-0 victory against Tranmere Rovers.

The season after Notts were back at the Twin Towers to record another promotion - this time to the top flight.

That season also saw the Magpies reach the sixth round of the FA Cup and included the famous triumph over Manchester City at Meadow Lane.

Improvements were certainly evident off the pitch during his tenure, with £8million being spent on redeveloping the Magpies' home.

To this day the stadium remains a suitable base for at least a Championship team.
