First win at the Lane

Posted on: Wed 03 Mar 2010

The Magpies recorded their first ever home win over Macclesfield Town in a 1-0 triumph last night.

Jamie Clapham nodded home the only goal of the game from a John Thompson cross to give County all three points.

Prior to the fixture, the Silkmen had picked up three wins and four draws from their seven trips to Meadow Lane

Notts boss Steve Cotterill was delighted to halt their run, making it two wins out of two under his guidance.

He explained: "It's a fantastic record they had but we're only pleased that we've made it back-to-back home wins.

"We put in a good defensive performance because they had to stand up and be counted back there.

"If we hadn't been I think they would've scored because from set-pieces they've got some big boys.

"But we got the first touch on most things and obviously when you do that it negates a lot of their threat.

"I went with a big back four and we do need to be tough from time to time.

"There are going to be teams that test us physically and I thought that was the case here.

"I like those clean sheets because they do wonders for you at the end of the season."

Cotterill admitted that the game wasn't a classic but felt that it sometimes needs to be the case in order to pick up the points.

He said: "Sometimes when you get to this stage of the season when the nerves are jangling, it might not always be entertaining.

"The lads entertained on Saturday and I'm sure they've entertained before, but they're not going to entertain all the time, it's about winning.

"We're very thankful for the three points and I thought the crowd were excellent.

"It's another three points that cements us right in there now.

"At the end of the day we would like the performance because nine times out of ten they end up in points anyway."
