First ever hat-trick

Posted on: Mon 01 Mar 2010

On Saturday Craig Westcarr netted his first career hat-trick in a 5-0 thumping of Hereford United.

Westcarr has been in fine scoring form this term, scoring nine times, despite featuring predominantly on the wing.

Just over half way into the campaign, the creative wide-man has already bettered his former best of eight goals, recorded on two occasions during spells with Cambridge and Kettering.

The 25-year-old explained that he goes into every game expecting to get onto the score sheet and was delighted to take the matchball home at the weekend.

"It felt good to get three goals, but it felt good to get three points as well," he said.

"To get a goal it gives you that confidence again and gets you on the cycle again.

"I always go into every game thinking I'm going to score and thinking that I'm going to have a good game.

"I never go into a game in a negative frame of mind and try to keep a clear head and play my own game."

He added: "I was happy with the fans giving me a great ovation when I went off.

"But to be fair I want that every week, I want to play well every week and deserve that ovation."

Notts now have a +32 goal average - the best in League Two - and Westcarr feels that there is more to the statistic than just Lee Hughes' goal-scoring form.

He explained: "To be fair to Hughesy, he is the best striker in the league, he's shown that with his 20-odd goals.

"But there's definitely more to this team than him getting all the goals.

"He knows that and everyone else knows that.

"It's all shared around the team and you need that if you're going to push on.

"It takes the burden off Lee, as well, if we're all chipping in.

"Hopefully we're going to keep scoring and winning games, because the aim is to keep winning and see where it gets us."
