Arnold Town 0-7 Notts County

Posted on: Tue 28 Jul 2009

Notts County cruised to a comfortable 7-0 victory at a rain-sodden Eagle Valley Stadium against Arnold Town in their latest pre-season friendly.

County mounted the early pressure and were unlucky not to open the scoring earlier than the thirteenth minutes when Sean Canham superbly flicked home Craig Westcarr's cross at the near post.

Canham then turned provider a few minutes later when he headed a deep ball into the box back across goal, and Craig Westcarr - who had gone close early on - guided the ball home.

Neal Bishop, Ricky Ravenhill and Mike Edwards all went close before Canham added his second just before the half hour, reacting first to a loose ball in the box to calmly slot home.

Luke Rodgers celebrated signing a two-year deal with County earlier in the day by adding the fourth, outpacing the home defence and keeping his composure to roll the ball into the net.

An Arnold player got in on the act before the break, but unfortunately for Town defender Chris Hudson it was at the wrong end as he diverted Jamie Clapham's low cross into his own goal.

Westcarr made it six of the best five minutes into the second half with a well-taken finish inside the box.

Ben Davies completed the rout late on with a penalty after he was brought down the area with nine minutes left.

The victory was comfortable and boss Ian McParland will have been pleased with the workout - but there was a small downside to the evening's proceedings with Ricky Ravenhill leaving the field early due to injury.

He will now expect to learn more about his squad with a step up in quality of the opposition County will face in their final pre-season fixtures against Forest, Derby and a Liverpool XI at Meadow Lane.

The battle for places will also begin to heat up ahead of the opening day clash with Bradford, so all three games will be vital to the County squad in their preparations.

Stephen Hunt and Matt Hamshaw were the only absentees for County due to injury, but neither is considered too serious.

Notts First Half: Hoult, Moloney, Edwards, Thompson, Clapham, Westcarr, Ravenhill, Bishop, Davies, Rodgers, Canham

Notts Second Half: Pilkington, Thompson (Trialist), Lee, Edwards, Clapham, Fairclough, Ravenhill, Bishop (Trialist), Davies,Westcarr, Facey
