JT: "Great Time To Be Notts Skipper"

Posted on: Tue 28 Jul 2009

John Thompson has admitted it an exciting time to be a Notts County player - and his case - the Magpies' Captain.

The Irishman was given the armband for the season by County boss Ian McParland earlier this month.

After seeing the takeover this week by Munto Finance finalised, Thompson is excited about the future as a County player.

"It is an exciting time to be a Notts County player, without any doubt," he said.

"It is a great thing (the takeover), I have said a few times the club is a sleeping giant ready to take off.

"I think most of all it is great for the supporters because in a way they have had quite a few years of misery.

"Hopefully this has given them a lift and we aim to keep that going by winning every week, which we plan to do quite a bit this season.

"From my point of view, to get the armband and was a big surprise actually considering the signings the Gaffer has made.

"I am delighted and honoured to be the skipper of this team, it is new to me but hopefully I will take it in my stride.

"What matters more though is us having a successful season," he added.

Speaking about County's training camp in Austria, Thompson feels County have been given the best preparation possible for the new season.

He said: "We've had some tough sessions out here, but it is a great venue to be doing your work.

"The atmosphere is good, if not a little tired at the moment!

"A lot of the lads spoke about Austria last season, so I was looking forward to coming out here.

"It hasn't been a let-down at all; it is a beautiful place to do your pre-season work.

"There isn't much to do around here, but that is good because it gets the lads breaking up into groups and the new lads integrate in with the rest of the squad.

"These trips bring out the best in everyone and the bonding."
