Wycombe Fan Congratulates County

Posted on: Fri 08 May 2009

Notts County's performance in last Saturday's 2-1 victory at Wycombe Wanderers has earned praise from a Chairboys supporter.

Wycombe gained promotion to League One despite the defeat, and Wanderers fan Derek Walker kindly took time during their celebrations after the game to send County boss Ian McParland an email to congratulate him on his side's performance.

John Thompson's brace at Adams Park had Wycombe's promotion hopes hanging by a thread - but Bury's 1-0 victory over Accrington Stanley meant the Chariboys secured automatic promotion on goal difference.

The email from Mr Walker said:

"Having seen your last match at Wycombe, I wanted to congratulate you on your team's excellent attitude.

As a Wycombe fan, I have looked at the run-in for most of the season, and noticing that we were due to play a mid-table team with little to play for on the last day, I have been quietly confident that we would end with little pressure on our last game.

How wrong I was. There was one team that looked like they needed something from the game and that was Notts Co. You showed the desire to win and thoroughly deserved your victory. I could not imagine from that performance how you could be so near the bottom of the table.

You hounded us all afternoon and put in some fine runs. If you keep that desire to win, you could have a great season next year and I wish you all the best.

Kind regards,
Derek Walker"

Responded McParland: "It's always nice to receive emails from opposition fans congratulating you on your performance, and I think it helps preserve sportsmanship in football.

"I would like to thank Derek for his email and wish Wycombe Wanderers every success next season in League One."
