John Thompson believes Notts County's performance and result at Wycombe last Saturday has set the standard for what the Magpies hope to achieve next season.

Thompson bagged in brace in a 2-1 win against Peter Taylor's men, who claimed promotion to League One despite the defeat.

County's display thoroughly merited the three points and Thompson feels if County have any aspirations of enjoyed a successful campaign next time around that sort of performance will be required on a more consistent basis.

"Despite ending the season with terrific result and performance it was still frustrating to see Wycombe celebrating promotion because you get a little jealous," said the County Captain.

"That is where we all want to be and that's something of a benchmark for us now.

"We need to perform like we did on Saturday every week and it is quite heartening we can take that performance and result into the summer.

"It might sound silly but we showed out there on Saturday that we're just as good as Wycombe.

"We know over the course of the season we've just not done it consistently and it hasn't been good enough.

"It is important we look at the positives; the majority of the team that played will be here next season and we know performances like that will have us challenging."
