McParland Delighted With Last-Day Win

Posted on: Sat 02 May 2009

Ian McParland was delighted to see his side end the season on a winning note at Wycombe Wanderers this afternoon.

John Thompson's last minute goal secured a 2-1 victory over Peter Taylor's Chairboys; who gained promotion to League One on goal difference despite the defeat.

Focusing on his own side, he was delighted with the performance along with the result.

He said: "It was fantastic to end on a winning note - and we deserved it by playing some good football.

"There inches between ourselves and Wycombe who are at the top end of the league; that's what League Two is all about.

"I'm so happy for them to get a victory against a good side in Wycombe who have been promoted."

Thompson's goals were his first for County and McParland joked he was in shock to see the Irishman on the scoresheet.

"I can't believe John Thompson scored two goals!" he said.

"He's never scored two goals in his life and I can't believe he got one with his left foot.

"I'm pleased for John; he was superb and has done a good job for us."

McParland's side took their chances at key moments today and the Scot went on to say his side must do more of that next season.

"I'm not making excuses for myself or the players but in the last five games we've been desperately unlucky not to have taken more points," he said.

"We've created enough chances in all the games to go ahead but instead we've missed them, gone a goal down and the lads' heads have dropped.

"That has been the major disappointment that we've not taken the chances over the season.

"If we can turn those chances into goals - and victories - next season it would be nice to have a promotion party of our own like Wycombe have had today."
