Bucket Collection On Monday

Posted on: Sun 12 Apr 2009

Nottingham City Council Leader, Councillor Jon Collins, is set to cycle from Paris to Nottingham in just five days in a final fund-raising push for the Danielle Beccan Trust, one of the Lord Mayor's Charities for this Civic Year…and he needs your support!

At Monday's home game with Grimsby Town there will be bucket collectors around Meadow Lane raising funds to support this worthy cause - and we're calling on supporters to donate whatever pennies, or pounds, they can spare!

As one of the local councillors for St Ann's where Danielle lived, Councillor Collins has been at the forefront of campaigns to reduce overall crime and gun crime.

Fourteen-year-old Danielle Beccan died after being shot on her way home from Goose Fair in 2004, marking one of the darkest moments in Nottingham's recent history. The Danielle Beccan Memorial Trust was set up to create a dance studio in the memory of Danielle, a keen dancer, which Councillor Collins supports. Now he has decided to complete the trip from Paris to Nottingham by bike in just five days as part of the final stage of fundraising for the Trust which so far has raised over £130,000.

Backed by the Lord Mayor, the Sheriff and County defender Michael Johnson, the Leader will be joined on the gruelling trip of nearly 400 miles by former City Council leader John Taylor and Jill Wilkinson from education charity Keys to Success, along with a support team from Nottingham City Homes.

They will leave Paris on Tuesday 14 April, and hope to return to Nottingham on Saturday 18 April in time to catch Forest's home game with Coventry City.

Councillor Collins said: "This is an important cause and I'm pleased to do what I can to bring the Trust's dream of a lasting memorial to Danielle closer to reality. I'm hopeful we'll raise £10,000, as a few years ago we raised over £25,000 by completing the Three Peaks Challenge in under 24 hours."
