McParland: "Goals Were Top Class"

Posted on: Sat 14 Feb 2009

Ian McParland described the quality of Matt Hamshaw and Jamie Clapham's goals as 'fit enough to grace the Premier League' after the duo fired home decisive strikes in today's 2-0 win over Barnet.

Notts cruised to their third win in four on home territory thanks to Hamshaw's perfect chip just before the break and Clapham's excellent free-kick after the hour at Meadow Lane.

Said McParland afterwards: "The quality of the goals was excellent; those two were fit to win a game at the very highest level.

"Hammy's was a superb little chip and Jamie's was a terrific free-kick into the top corner.

"We had other chances as well, Butch was clear one-on-one but he's a bit rusty at the moment otherwise he'd have put that opportunity away.

"All-in-all it was a great three points for us and it was also great to get a clean sheet."

McParland felt his side put in a display worthy of all three points, but admitted his side didn't quite reach the standards they've set themselves in recent weeks - not that he was complaining with three points in the bag!

"We played well today, but we didn't hit the heights that we've hit in previous games," he explained.

"It's getting a bit difficult to fizz the ball about on the pitch right now; it's coming to that time of the season now.

"We still played well though and I'm very happy with a win."

With County 2-0 up just after the hour, the stage was set to hand comebacks to Richard Butcher and Adam Tann after long spells out injured.

McParland was delighted to welcome back the influential duo with games coming thick and fast over the next month-and-a-half.

He said: "It was good to get them back on the pitch and get some football under their belts.

"It has been tough for them without a reserve team and with a lot of games coming up we will need them in the near future.

"We got Jonno off for a breather as well and we'll see how he feels on Monday before we decide on the team for Tuesday at Macclesfield."
