We are sad to report that Jack Wheeler, a true legend of Notts County, died today.

Jack, who was 89, had been ill for a few months and will be fondly remembered by everyone who knew him.

Born in Evesham, he was a First Division goalkeeper with Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town before linking up with Tommy Lawton at Kettering.

He followed Lawton to Meadow Lane and was to remain with the Magpies for 26 years, during which time he never missed a single first-team game.

Jack filled various roles including that of Caretaker Manager before the arrival of Jimmy Sirrel, and figured prominently throughout County's rise from the Fourth Division to the First.

County Chairman John Armstrong-Holmes said: "Jack was an absolute gentleman who devoted the best years of his working life to Notts County.

"He was absolutely black and white and nothing mattered more to him in the football sense than the fortunes of this club.

"He will be sorely missed and we extend our condolences to his wife Olga and their children."

A minute's applause in memory of Jack was being held in advance of today's home game against Exeter City.
