An Emotional Goodbye To A Legend

Posted on: Fri 10 Oct 2008

Tuesday was an emotionally-charged day for those connected with Jimmy Sirrel and Notts County Football Club as the legendary Scot was laid to rest.

The Scot, who sadly passed away aged 86 two weeks ago tomorrow, is arguably the most successful Manager in the history after guiding the club to the top flight of English football in 1981 - and many said their final goodbyes and celebrate the life of one of football's greatest characters on an emotional day.

The funeral took place at St Mary's Church in Nottingham on Tuesday afternoon, with the procession starting at Meadow Lane shortly after 12:40pm - with over 150 fans turning out in the rainy conditions, showing just how many hearts he won during his time at Meadow Lane.

The church itself was packed with hundreds of monours, including family, former players, current players, club staff ex-Managers and many friends from down the years.

Former Magpies players Dean Yates, Ian McParland, Les Bradd, Mick Leonard, Iain McCulloch and Jon Nixon carried the coffin into the church led by a man playing the bagpipes at 1pm.

Famous faces such as Sir Alex Ferguson, David Pleat, Gordon Taylor, Lawrie McNenemy and Jim Smith were all in attendance.

Sir Alex said: "Jimmy truly was a great man. In my early years in management he was always there to give me advice.

"He meant a lot to me. At times when you weren't doing well he would be on the end of the phone."

Former England and Magpies Coach Howard Wilkinson and BBC Radio Nottingham's Colin Slater paid their own personal tributes in the church before a rendition of the traditional football hymn "Abide with me" to end the service.

Many friends and relatives then gathered at Meadow Lane afterwards in a private function to share many of their stories of their time with Jimmy.

Late into the evening over 300 people poured into the 1862 Suite for the Lifeline Gala Night, and all those attending took in a ten-minute video of Jimmy on the big screen.

A glass was raised in Jimmy's name - bringing an end to an emotional day.

As Colin Slater said in his closing speech in Chruch: "Thanks for the memories old friend."

Manager Ian McParland, who was signed by Sirrel as a youngster in the 1980s, felt the day was the perfect send-off for the legendary Scot.

He said: "There's no doubt it was a great send-off for Jimmy. It was a tough day, but everyone were able to reflect on the life of a great man with many fond memories and stories."

RIP Jimmy Sirrel 1922-2008
