TRIBUTES
"A sad day and year for the club" Tony Emslie
"Very sad news. Jimmy as the boss dominated my childhood Notts memories. My favourite quote? " If ye dinnae score ye dinnae win".....RIP Jimmy." Iain in Leicester
"I had the privilege to see Jimmy walk out on the pitch to rouse the fans when we looked as though things were not going our way yet again in another season of loss!! also saw his side beat many a team home and away whilst stood on the freezing kop or in the shed on county road, or in some far off ground miles from home, but with him and Jack Wheeler at the helm i would not have missed it for the world - being akid then was bliss!!
The man lifted the fans!! Hearing ONE JIMMY SIRREL and seeing the love on his face for the club and supporters of the club is priceless like Jimmy was! no like Jimmy is!! and will always be!! a much loved man of the supporters and will be missed!!
A sad day for the family of Jimmy and the club plus its supporters!! RIP Jimmy Sirrel a man who will never be forgotten at the lane!!!" Gary Brown
"RIP Jimmy a true legend never forgotten" Gary Gosling
"All the young Notts fans knew who he was even though they never seen his team play, that goes to show what a Legend he really was for this club. RIP Jimmy." Mark Hosker
"Truly sad news. Jimmy brought many years of happiness to my life from a young age and I will never forget that. He made me proud to be a Notts County Fan. We will not see the likes of you again. RIP Jimmy" Russell Dexter
"I am only 21 and i am gutted, i know he was a real legend and my dad can talk for hours about him. I will be singing his name on Saturday" Daniel Harwood
"As a true football fan, I was saddened to hear of the death of Jimmy Sirrell today. I am an Aldershot Town fan, but have always been a fan of Notts County and Notts Forest. He was a true gentleman and one of the very few charachters left. He will be missed. R.I.P. JIMMY" Dave Fretwell
"I knew Jimmy was unwell, but, I am completely shocked and devastated to hear the news of his passing. Condolencies to all his family and many friends. I hope the club to which he devoted himself can pull out all the stops and give him a fitting send off. Sad today, but, will always have the greatest memories of and admiration for OUR greatest manager. Rest in peace Jimmy." Stephen Newton (Jimmy Sirrel Stand)
"Sad though it is, let us make this Saturday, a day of celebration for the great man. Tears may fall, but his spirit will live on forever, God bless him." Ned
"One of my best memories of Sir Jimmy, was when i was around 10 or 11 years old.....was at a Junior Magpies disco and there was a Notts County and football quiz on, which i managed to win, and when i had collected my prize, Jimmy not only told my dad that he had a special boy there, he also came up to me personally and congratualted me on my footballing knoweldge! was an awesome moment for me, and will live with me forever. Had my picture taken with him wqhen i was 8 years old, for my junior magpies soccer skills award, and he was great with me then. Also like to thank him for December 4th 1982!" Ian Marsden, Howden Magpie
"Jimmy was the heart and soul of the club. I remember an article in the News of World back in the 980's entitled "Miracle Man". Getting a club with no funds from the fourth division to the first, keeping them there for three seasons, competing with and beating teams like Man Utd. A miracle." Andrew Kordecki
"Jimmy was an inspiration" Colin Lowton
"God bless him:RIP Jimmy.. very few can say that they did or ever will achieve what this great man achieved on such a low budget ...condolences to his family by birth by marriage and by the unbroken chain of County fans.- Gary G [Gas Head] This was sent to me by a good friend and Bristol Rovers fan, I can only reiterate his words, For me, JS was the greatest manager ever known, and whilst I prey for his family, I believe that Jimmy has left us with another great man in Ian McParland. Thank you Jimmy for everything you have given to NCFC, a true legend that will never die in our hearts." Pete Burrows
"I count myself very fortunate to have been a supporter long enough to have witnessed Jimmy's arrival at the Club and the Golden Years of Magpies' football that followed. After watching Notts struggle for three years from my first match in April 66, he quickly transformed the team and its fortunes within weeks. They were great times and even now, it's easy to recall goals, incidents, results and players from that time with a smile. He - and his team - achieved far more than we could ever dream about. These days, the term 'Legend' is massively overused, but in Jimmy's case it fits the bill perfectly. Hearty thanks Jimmy for providing such fantastic memories for me and thousands of other fans; your memory will live on." Ian Gill
"My earliest memories of watching Notts as a 10 year old were watching Jimmy's great side of the seventies. He was as good as Clougie and other great managers when you think about the resources available. I remember going to Chelsea on the supporters club bus when we got promoted to Division 1 with his wife (sorry cannot remember her name and who sadly died many years ago). We were all hugging and kissing her in celebration. She was as thrilled as we were. He was not just the manager of the club but also a fan." Martin Hall - Jimmy Sirrel Stand"

"Gone but never forgoten thanks for the memories jimmy a true legend." Nic Symes "Condolences to all Notts fans on the loss of a true County legend" From a Rotherham supporter "I'm not a Notts County fan, I'm a Derby fan, but Jimmy Sirrell was one of those rare personalities in football who not only personified the way football should be done (rather than the multi-millionaire's toy it seems to have become), but who seemed to be as respected by other clubs and fans as much as by his own. The football world is a little bit poorer today. RIP Jimmy" Steve Forster "I'm in shock. God bless Jimmy its a very sad day for your family and for Notts county you will always be remembered as the best. And will always be the greatest." John Tennyson "3 simple words tell you all you need to know about this man - Simply The Best" Mark from Bingham "Jimmy was one of football's last great characters. His like will never been seen again, and Meadow Lane will never be the same without him. Rest Peacefully, Jimmy, and thanks for the great memories." Natty - Stapleford |
"A sad day for his Family & All Notts fans, Jimmy Sirrel was a truly great manager and person, a character who kept his football team close to his chest and was successful without the big money buy's of other clubs, he was up there with the Liverpool's and Man U of his day. Meadow Lane won't be the same. RIP Jimmy Sirrel "Simply the Best" Jimmy Willan
"Rest in peace jimmy. A true football legend."you'll never walk alone" Celtic Mick from Nottingham
"Jimmy Sirrel a legend 100 times over!!!! I remember him being the special guest one Saturday afternoon and as he walked on the pitch the noise and support for him was peunominal. The ringing of "theres only one Jimmy sirrel" was mind blowing. The man is, and always will be a legend especially in the eyes of all notts county supporters and everyone associated with the club. Thank you for your passion, commitment, desire, time and effort that you put in to Notts county football club, you will be sadly missed. Rest in peace Jimmy, you've done us proud." Linzi Martin
"A sad day, in the history of our Club, I never really followed Nott's in the time that Jimmy was at the helm, but I know that a lot of our history and the great times we have endured are down to him, lets make Saturday the start of a great tribute to a great man and help get our club back where we belong and where Jimmy would want us to be, it does not matter how many are there on Saturday, whatever the attendance is add one to it, because Jimmy will be there on the touch line. A friend has given me a scarf to add to Jimmy's tribute, he's a life long Celtic fan, and remembers Jimmy from the early day, he wants his scarf adding to what I am sure will be an amazing site. RIP… SIR Jimmy, you may be gone, you'll never be forgotten." Pete C - Alloa (Scotland)
But the memories i have will always be with me every time i step foot through the turnstiles. Im back on the kop now, season ticket in hand. I hope everyone enjoys the game on Saturday as i have every match home and away since that day i discovered Notts County and Mr Sirrel. So heres to Mr Jimmy Sirrel, the greatest manager in the world ever to grace the greatest football club in the world.
Come on you pies." Dave Goodwin (Bottesford)
"34 years when me and my mate Chris met Jimmy Sirrel in his car out side the ground after the game and he said to us in his Scottish ways you lads wanting a drink we said sorry jimmy weare not old enough. What a wonderful man and manager rest in peace jimmy and ill have that drink on you now!" From magpies Geoff and Chris
"A sad day for Notts County & football in general. A great man manager. Remember when I used to help out with behind closed doors trials running the line & Jimmy stood alone on the Jimmy Sirrel side after a few offside given , he shouted to me " hey lino don't flag any one offside lets see what they can do on a one to one" a great character. What he did for the club I will always remember. Wonder if he will be managing the big football pitch in the sky." Maurice Tomlinson
"Jimmy Sirrel was to me the king of Meadow Lane I was lucky enough to see his team on many occassions and they put pride back into their supporters by the inspiration given to them by the Master R.I.P Jimmy you were the best and will always be in the memory of all true notts fans." Tony Evans, ATHERSTONE
"We had the great pleasure of sitting chatting to Jimmy, when we were having a pre-match lunch. Over a coffee, (with a nip of scotch in it!) he reminisced of the old days, and spoke of his hope the the Pies would stay up that season, and that we would progress in the next. He was such an astute, humorous and positive man - a true legend of the club, and a very sad loss to the world of football. Very much a gentleman, and very much missed. My thoughts are with his family at this very sad time. Hopefully, we will all do him proud on Saturday" Sally - Pie, Beeston
"I am not a true Magpie fan but follow them with interest as my father-in-law is, and was born a mile from the lane but now lives in Winchester, Hants. It was a shock to see how Mr Sirrel's death had shaken him this morning, and he told me a little about how he (Mr. Sirrel) had put NCFC back on the football map in the 80's God bless you Mr. Sirrel for making my father-in-law proud to be a County Fan." A Chelsea fan first but Notts County close behind
"I started watching Notts County in 1974, and my best memory was going to see Notts beat the mighty Leeds United and the Notts Fans singing "nice one Sirrel lets have another one" and "Super Notts" a true legend of Notts County and I will never forget him, I was lucky enough to go to the portrait presentation and got Jimmy to autograph my programme of the night, God bless you Jimmy." Jurgen Halligan
"I saw Notts right the way through 1970/1971 when Jimmy gained his first promotion. I was 17 then and places like Newport, Oldham, Bradford Park Ave will never be forgotten. Jimmy with Jack let 2 of us each match carry the players kit into the away dressing room around 1pm then walk out the tunnel for free into an empty ground. No matter, 2 hours wait for the game never hurt. A great tactician, manager, person and family man. My life has taken many turns over 55 years but whatever I'll be crying for Jimmy inside, this Saturday afternoon, on the Kop." Mick Follows, Junior Magpie 1968 - 1971.
"Mention Notts County, mention Jimmy Sirrell. It sent a shiver down my spine when i read that Jimmy had passed away. I started following Notts County in 1986 and that year Jimmy managed to inspire a top ten finish with little or no resources. Then as time passed I read about Jimmy and what he had achieved and only wish I'd been around to see the Sirrell years. Maybe saturdays match shirts should have Jimmy's name on them as a mark of respect far more considerable than an arm band and a minutes silence. On Saturday a victory and 110% performance is needed to respect and honour the achievment of Notts County's greatest manager, personality and legend." Nora Kirk
"Newly promoted Notts had just defied all the odds and experts by beating the League Champions Aston Vanilla (a Jimmy-ism!) on their own ground. Jimmy was interviewed on television. Remember that he was hardly a media magnet! The interviewer waxed lyrical about the achievement and put it to Jimmy that he must have been overjoyed at getting such an impressive result. Jimmy thought for an instance and then, in the dry, Glaswegian tone of his,he stared into the camera and said those words that, even now, are so fresh in my mind and always make me smile; "well, that's what I'm paid for so to do y'undastand, eh?". The interviewer was speechless!Priceless.I was only 10 in 1971 but the memories are so vivid. So many wonderful memories Jimmy - thanks so much." Neil Pike
"As a young teacher running school teams in West Yorkshire in the 1980's, I regularly came across fairly decent young players whom I regarded as potential professionals. A Notts County supporter of many years, I would often telephone Meadow Lane to inform the Great Man of my "finds". To my amazement, he found time to call me back to discuss my recommendations and I would walk around school all day on Cloud Nine, informing any of my colleagues who might be interested: "Jimmy Sirrel telephoned me today - the Jimmy Sirrel!" Jimmy Sirrel - in our family, a footballing legend." Fred Butler

"I used to go and visit Jimmy when he was in the city hospital where I worked and spent many happy times with him talking about Notts County and football in general .Looking at his book of all the players he had seen and the comments he had made about them.He was a great gentleman and manager who is a sad loss to football and I will miss seeing him down Meadow Lane. R.I.P. Jimmy we will never forget you." Barbara Andrews "Jimmy was classed as a hero in our family back in the 70's and 80's.One thing I will always remember is the day his wife died. We had a match that Saturday and I understand he kept the news back from the players, only informing the chairman, until after the match. He will be greatly missed." Peter,Linda,Karen and Mike Ebbins |
"Unfortunately i wasnt around for the sirrel era but still i am so devastated. a true notts county legend. RIP jimmy. remembered and loved by all." Gareth Jones
|
"I count myself very lucky to have been watching Notts during Jimmy's times in charge and have some wonderful memories. I attended many away matches in those days and Jimmy was always happy to have a chat and thank fans for travelling. A lovely man who will be sadly missed." Stella
"A sad sad day for Notts & football as a whole, you are Notts County & Notts County is you. A true and proper legend, you will be sadly missed by all. You will never be forgotten. RIP Sir Jimmy !!!" Andy McNish
"Just wanted to say thanks Jimmy for all you did for my football club. May you rest in peace. You will be sadly missed" Paul
"I first went to a Notts County match at the age of Thirteen and remember that I felt so priveleged to be watching the world's oldest football league club. I didn't know too much about the man the fans were all chanting, but it did not take long to realise that he was seen as a hero to the faithful crowd. As the seasons passed, and as my appreciation of good quality football improved, I too became enamoured with the Great man and the quality of the players he was able to attract to the club. I was a regular in the County road stand for many years and I always said that even though the wheel fell off the barrow, it was ok because Jimmy was able to carry it and move the best club in the world forward. We will miss you Jimmy, but your legacy will live for many years to come, and you will always be in the hearts of true football fans." Phil (30 years a magpie)
"R.I.P. Jimmy, thank you for everything you did for this great club. You are gone but will never be forgotten." Mark Eade, Halifax
"I met Jimmy once over a pie and a pint, and I often quote an extract from an interview he gave to a national newspaper: "When things are at their lowest, that's when you have to keep working..."His funeral will presumably take place within the next few days and, I tell you, the whole of Nottingham will turn out. It will be quite an occasion. He also said, "The secret [of success], if there is one, is to get people's respect. Without that you are lost. You might be a bastard and still get it - it isn't just a matter of being nice to people." Jimmy signed my limited edition book on the history of Notts County when I met him. His signature is alongside that of Tommy Lawton - the greatest centre forward ever to play for England - and who lived opposite me when I lived in Nottingham. He died in near-poverty, having played in an age when the salaries we see today were the stuff of dreams. It doesn't really matter whether Notts beat Aldershot tomorrow or not. RIP, Jimmy. What a hero... " Richard Howe "Jimmy was a true legend. In a world where football is full of people looking to be superstars and image conscious, Jimmy was just plain old Jimmy who had the right ideas and got them accross to his players. Like Shankly of old- He made the people happy. We will miss him." Raymond Farrell
"1 jimmy sirrel-theres only 1 jimmy sirrel-1 jimmy sirrel !! Missed by thousands R.I.P Sir Jimmy" Rob Hulley
"I was fortunate to come and live in Nottinghamshire in Sept 1970 and saw Notts for the first time within days of arriving. As we all know, the team brushed all aside as they took the 4th Division title by storm that season and - OK call me a glory hunter in you like - I jumped on the bandwagon and remain so to this day. As my wife and two girls will testify, Jimmy Sirrel has a lot to answer for! Jimmy's down to earth management style, his ability to get the best out of players and his 'no frills' approach to the media endeared him to thousands of fans over many years. My one abiding memory however, is of Jimmy the 'Pie. Those of us who attended the Astoria in 1986 and the launch of Lifeline, were drawn by the prospect of our club going out of existence. There we were addressed by many stalwarts of the club, past and present, and encouraged to participate in the new fund raising venture. It was effectively the club's lifeline! Jimmy spoke that evening with a passion which suggested to me that he was not doing this out of duty to his employer but because, like us, he cared for the club. Like many of us there he knew that life would be much the poorer were Notts County to fold and he was determined to do all he could to prevent that happening. That night he proved to me that he was a true 'Pie! To those of us reading this who are saddened by Jimmy's death and who wish for something positive to come from his passing, may I suggest that you take out another Lifeline subscription either for yourself or a friend/relative and dedicate it to Jimmy's memory." Mike, Newton
"SIR JIMMY SIRREL. GREAT PLAYER AND MANAGER. MAJOR LOSS TO THE CLUB... 4th DIVISION TO 1st TRUE LEGEND. NO-ONE WILL BE ABLE TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS, ON BEHALF OF ALL FANS AT NOTTS COUNTY... REST IN PEACE. YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN...RIP JIMMY - 2 February 1922 - 25 September 2008 :-(" PAUL NEWTON - JIMMY LIVES ON IN US ALL
"Jimmy Watched your Notts County teams play with with style and panache.Old fashioned attacking football. with rampaging wingers and deadly centre forwards, classy midfielders and hard as nails defences. From division 4 to the top. Thanks . There was nobody else like you." Duncan McPhie Notts & Hearts
"I can remember meeting Jimmy about 8 years or so ago one Christmas eve in the Aviary pub on Trent Bridge. I spent about an hour in his company and among all the stories there is one i can remember him telling me. He said he was on a scouting trip up to Stockport one Tuesday evening in the middle of January as we were playing them on the Saturday. So he drove all the way up the A6 and when he got to Stockport he couldn't find his way to the ground. You would thin they would have some floodlights on an hour afore kick off, he said to me. He eventually found the ground and there were no lights on and no offices open and no one hanging around. He eventually found someone walking his dog past the ground and stopped him and asked what time kick off was. " 7.30 tomorrow night" came the reply. Not only had he wasted a trip all the way over the pennines but he had to make the same journey the following night. A great character and a wonderful person who had the club at heart. God bless you Jimmy. We will never forget you. Rest in Peace sir." Dave, Stapleford
"Although I was born in Beeston and watched Notts for many year, I have now lived in Reading for over 30 years and so usually go to their games, but I still look for the Notts score every matchday. I particularly remember beating Tranmere 4-1 on I think Easter Monday 1972 or 3 to go up into Div 2 for the first time for many decades, and I know Mr Sirrel must take the credit for much of the success in the 70's and 80's which we enjoyed. I also have a third-hand anecdote about Jimmy which may amuse the fans. A friend of a friend was doing some plumbing or building work at Meadow Lane near the manager's office. Unfortunately the builder / plumber concerned had been hitting the Shippo's a bit seriously the night before and was shall we say leaving behind (sic) some rather unpleasant odours. As he was leaving the building after his work was completed, he heard a gruff scottish voice float along the corridor - "Open a window afore ye go will ye laddie "...Best wishes to all at Notts and hope some success (and a win !) comes soon." Rob Booth- Reading, Berks
"I became a County fan after attending Notts v Blackburn at the end of the 72/73 season, attended by over 22,000 fans! Since then, I attended many significant games before emigrating downunder, I had the pleasure of meeting Jimmy a few times. On one occasion I was working at a pub in Thurgarton on the eve of a Notts v Sheffield Utd game. It was the time when Jimmy was manager of Sheffield United, I was in awe when the great man walked in with his wife Kathy for dinner. I was thrilled to serve them all evening and when they had finished dinner and were about to leave, I expressed my allegiance to the Magpies and perhaps a little unsportingly said to Jimmy, 'I hope you'll be on the losing side tomorrow!'. He gave me one of those wry 'Jimmy' looks that made me wish I could have eaten my words. Jimmy's reply said it all: 'may the best team win'. Jimmy thanks for all the magic moments. Great memories that will last a lifetime. My condolences to your family and many friends."
Simon Tupman, Ohakune, New Zealand "I remember getting Jimmy's autograph when I was about 10, back around 1975. He ruffled my hair and said something in his broad accent that I didnae understand ! But it was great to watch his teams in the '70's. Let's hope some of his inspiration can rub off on the current team ! RIP Sir Jim !" Stephen Bullin
"Greatness is something used all too frequently these days when it is not deserved. Greatness and legend can be applied to Jimmy with the certainty it is richly deserved, for his achievements at Notts County, and for the high regard in which he is held throughout the game of Football. You were unique Jimmy and you have given me the happiest football memories of my life. You will never be forgotten and will forever be in the hearts of all Notts County supporters. It was a privilege for me to witness the success you brought to our great club. Thank you Jimmy you are the best Notts County has ever had. RIP Jimmy" Ian, Aylesbury
"As a Notts County fan since I was a young girl I remember Jimmy as a manager. He was a great man who always had time to speak to the fans. I was truly upset to read of his passing, he was a great man and will be missed greatly. R.I.P Jimmy." Becky Tidworth "Jimmy Sirrel = LEGEND. R.I.P Jimmy." From Simon Allwood (a life long Nottingham Forest fan
"many thanks jimmy for many happy memories of watching the magpies. my late father took me to see ncfc some 35 years ago and he would talk about jimmy sirrel this fantastic manager, and this fantastic character of a gentleman. that 1.0 win against the mighty leeds utd what memories. i had the pleasure of meeting this great man in the wheatseaf public house burton joyce, yes the great man chatted to us an hour and a half fantastic memories. R.I.P. JIMMY SIRREL A TRUE LEGEND. lets fill meadow lane on saturday as a tribute to jimmy." Mark Truman
"A sad day but happy memories. I wonder if someone could put together an on-line album of classic Jimmy sayings, it would be great reading and bring back great memories." Rich, Mapperley
"A true notts legend,Wont be able to make game on saturday but will be thinking about everyone. From first s eason ticket in 1977-78,It was a pleasure in those days to actual watch decent football with a manger who had no airs and graces,And always had time to acknowledge the fans,The diffrence with jimmy was he meant it." R.I.P Ozzie in Inverkeithing,Fife
"Like so many others the sad news has hit me hard.So many of my heroes have passed away in recent years - John Peel, Joe Strummer, my Dad - and now Jimmy who made being a Notts fan as a schoolboy in the 70s such a fantastic thing. We were proud and loud going into school every Monday morning. I have so many great memories of Jimmy, who I looked up to in awe.I remember him singing on the pitch "I belong to Glasgow" when we won the fourth division title in 1971.I remember him being featured on Football Focus or Grandstand receiving his OAP bus pass but still out on the training ground in his tracksuit.I still remember how physically sick I felt when I heard the announcement that Jimmy had gone to Sheffield United - because for us he was Notts County.Thank goodness he was soon back. It's amazing reading the tributes how many fans, especially kids, were welcomed behind the scenes to meet Jimmy and the team.My dad rang up Jimmy and arranged for me to go into the dressing room and get autographs after an afternoon midweek reserve game - I can't remember the opposition - I was made welcome by Jimmy and the team despite some of them nursing some nasty knocks and injuries. Goodbye Jimmy and thanks for everything." Ian McCondach (West Yorkshire) "R:I:P Mr sirrel.I have been a Notts supporterfor 25 years.(from Norway)He has brought me many lovely memories back in the eighties.Sad that he is gone, but thats life......Please lads win for him This saturday against Aldershot!" Mvh Roy (Oslo)
"My condolences to jimmy sirrells family at what must be a sad time for them, but I hope they are proud of what Jimmy meant to so many people, especially those at Notts County. I started watching Notts in 1978 and can say I cant recall Jimmy being anything other than professional in his role as manager in front of the public. there are plenty of managers in the game today who could learn from the example Jimmy Sirrell set. He deserves the title 'LEGEND' as he showed total commitment to Notts County, the players and the fans and we are able to reflect on the achievements he made and on what a great ambassador Jimmy has been for the club. a well deserved Rest in Peace. God bless you Jimmy!" Steve C ( life long Magpie.)
"What a man, what a manager! I first watched Notts in September, 1956, it's been a seesaw ride ever since. Just two from a long list of proud memories - League Cup, 1974 (or was it 75?), Elland Road v Leeds in their prime. When Albert Scanlon struck the winner I jumped in the air, surrounded by Leeds fans. They said "you deserve it". Les Bradd was awesome, and I'm sure he and the team owed it all to Jimmy. Second, on the training ground, watching Jimmy put the forwards through their paces - one-twos on the edge of the box, play the winger in, cross to the near or far post, endlessly practised until they got it right. I almost echo other comments - Nottingham was blessed with more than one great manager, but only one great coach." Phil Green, Rennington, Northumberland "I was saddened to learn of Jimmy's passing when I got my newsletter by e-mail yesterday. I left England in 1978 a fervent Notts supporter since the late 60's and have always followed their fortunes since then. In fact I was in Nottingham in July this yearand stopped by the storeon Meadow Lane and bought some souvenirs! Jimmy epitomized sincerity and hard work, and his teams always worked hard for him, thru good times and bad. It's hard to imagine County surviving all those years ago without his determination and eagerness to win. From my home in Ottawa, Canada I raise a final glass to Jimmy Sirrel, God bless you Jimmy, and thanks for all the great times in Nottingham." Ian Walker "Thanks for all those amazing days in my youth Jimmy. The most amazing must have been standing on the terraces at Villa Park when Notts beat League champions Aston Villa 1-0 on their first game back in the top flight. I'll never forget that day." John Jarman
"THERES ONLY ONE JIMMY SIRREL!! ONE JIMMY SIRREL THERES ONLY ONE JIMMY SIRREL!!!" Dave Mills
"We all Love you Jimmy. you were a Legend and a gentlemen. You are gone and will NEVER be forgotten by Fans Young and Old alike. R.I.P. Jimmy "Legend" Sirrel" Steve Smith
"The greatest Notts County manager of all time and a true gentlemen.Always found time for the fans, sign autographs and make you feel part of the club.Started watching Notts at the age of 6 in 1972." Andrew Rare
"Having been a Notts fan for some 55 years now, Jimmy will always be Meadow Lane to me. Like many, who hvae followed him, he had little cash but he knew how to get respect from his players and by that their best performance on the field. He produced from nowhere key players and the best tribute I have heard was on Saturday's Football Focus from the one and only Mark Lawrenson who was full of praise for what he did for the Magpies. Rest in peace now Jimmy and thanks for the memories." Eric Jackson
"I feel honoured to have seen us play under the greatest manager we've ever had and will probably ever have. The man was more than a legend and will be sadly missed by us all. But he will never be forgotten. Those of us who can remember him as manager will forever remember what he did for us. Those fans who are too young to remember always have always will take a keen interest in our stories of his achievements. His spirit will live with us all for always." Rob Holland "It is thanks to Jimmy that I, as a Notts fan since birth in 1958 got to experience so much joy watching football - and such great memories: Jimmy bought Bob Worthington from Middlesborough and negotiated Don Masson as part of the deal!!!! Jimmy's teams always played with flair and he signed and nurtured some great players...... and; Alan Mansley! It is testament to his skills that other managers where unable to consolidate his work (excepting Wilkinson and Warnock), Kendall for example. If only Dunnett had allowed us to sign Glen Roeder! We all know he would have made that difference. I now live in the States and this news seems to emphasise the end of my old life. Football will never be as much fun as it was supporting Notts in the 70's and 80's, it is in the blood, but the blood is now very thin! Thanks Jim, your family can be very proud!" Philip S Rose Folsom CA "I first went along to Notts in 1970 with my Dad, and grew up watching Notts and it was pure joy. Every time I think of Jimmy Sirrel I well up, as I know he helped create my love of football, and he will be sorely missed." Jeremy Dawson
"I was 4 years old when I first went to Notts'. Jimmy Sirrel had not long joined the club and for many years I watched the man weave his magic. At school I was teased for being a Magpie. When I left in 1981 Notts were top flight and a prouder, smugger young man , you could not have met. Saturday was justifiably emotional and fitting. I would like to add my congratulations to the Aldershot fans who not only made the effort to come to Meadow Lane but celebrated their share of the sirrel legend and partied with the Notts fans in a celebration of both Jimmy and football itself." Chalky Mik "jimmy was a really great man the inspiration to all who ever played under him his sides were average sides. i can only remember the 3rd time jimmy was in charge when notts were starting to drop but jimmy stopped the drop and turned it around. thanks jimmy for all the work you have put in over time will never be forgotten. you will be missed. R.I.P jimmy" John Parr
"Jimmy was a great gentleman and a great manager. He turned up whenever he could to watch the team. I remember once seeing him in the derek pavis stand on a cold winters afternoon in all his winter gear, cracking a few jokes about the weather. It is very sad that he has now moved on but i believe that he will be there watching down over the club. His speech before the game a few years back bought a tear to my eye and he made sure it would be a day ill never forget. Rest in peace jimmy, you will always be missed and never forgotton." "As a child I was honoured to watch some great football played by Notts under Jimmy Sirrel. The team had great spirit and fight and Jimmy performed miracles with limited resources. A true legend - the world of football has lost a great ambassador to the sport. Our condolences to his family.May the spirit of Jimmy live forever in the club, and may Notts soon be once again a force to be reckoned with. RIP Jimmy. YOU PIES!!" The Aldred's |
