Butch's Stats Return To Haunt Him

Posted on: Tue 02 Sep 2008

Richard Butcher was hoping he had banished last season's personal underwanted statistic after netting the winner against Wycombe in April.

It was something of a fact that when Butch scored last season Notts didn't win - that was until he bagged his twelfth of the season in the 1-0 win over Wycombe in the penultimate game of the season.

The stat bugged him, there was no hiding that. On Saturday it clearly was again, heading down the tunnel to conduct a post-match interview he said: "You know what happens when I score."

And once again he was denied being the headline maker on Saturday as Shrewsbury's Michael Symes nodded home an equaliser two minutes from time in the 2-2 draw at Meadow Lane.

Butcher described the dressing room as 'gutted' as Notts were left still searching for their first win of the season in League Two - but he believes that the standards Notts have set themselves with some pleasing performances is enough to suggest the season will be a positive one.

He said: "We're all really disappointed we didn't win the game, in fact we were all absolutely gutted afterwards.

"If Shrewsbury are top of the League then the season is going to be an optimistic one for sure.

"I didn't want to take last year's stats into this year - but so far that has been the case.

"I don't really care who scores, we just want to win football matches - and when we do we'll be nearer the top than the bottom I'm sure of that.

"To be fair we shouldn't have to score three goals at home to win a football match; we need to defend better as a team."

And Butcher believes while Notts' performances have been pleasing and encouraging - the bottom line is the Magpies have to start winning game, and to do that the mistakes must be irradiated.

"We have to cut the errors out," said the former Peterborough United midfielder.

"We're playing really well and the supporters can see that, but we're not winning games.

"That is what is all about and we know we have to start winning.

"It is a bit worrying but the Gaffer has told us to keep our heads up, and we'll turn it around for sure."

Butcher has already labelled the game at home to Bournemouth this weekend as a must-win fixture.

He said: "We had a few chances late on even after they scored, and I thought the Kop were going to suck the ball over the line late on when Delroy and myself had chances.

"Bournemouth are here next weekend and we have to win now. We want to get that win."
