Ian: "Naive Defending Cost Us"

Posted on: Sat 30 Aug 2008

Ian McParland cut a frustrated figure when conducting his post-match press conference this afternoon after the 2-2 draw with Shrewsbury Town, and admitted: "We should have won the game".

Notts were begged back twice by the leaders at Meadow Lane, with Dave Hibbert and Michael Symes cancelling out goals from Mike Edwards and Richard Butcher.

Symes' effort came just two minutes from time, leaving Notts still searching for their first League win of the season.

"I'm disappointed, because scoring two goals at home we should have won the game," said the Scot.

"The goals were conceded were naive, they shouldn't have even come to chances.

"Until we get that out of our game, we won't win games.

"When we went ahead a few of our boys started to panic, and there was no need."

McParland felt for all the good football and attacking play his side produced the three points would have been merited.

In fact his side dominated the first half with seven shots to Shrewsbury's none.

"We had seven or eight chances and I think we dominated the play against a good Shrewsbury side," he said.

"If we can score two goals in every home game I'll be happy, but we just have to cut that naive defending out of our play.

"We didn't stop the crosses coming in and we didn't kill the game off. Their first goal got their tails up and for the second we should have shut-up shop.

"For all the good stuff we've played today we don't have those three points to show for it.

"There was some good football out there, and I really wanted to go in the dressing room and tell the lads they were magnificent today - but I can't because of the goals we conceded."

Commenting on his second-half dismissal to the stands, he said: "I don't want to talk about it."
