Ian McParland has urged his Notts County side to be more ruthless in their play as they go in search of their first League victory of the season this weekend.

McParland's side take on early League Two leaders Shrewsbury Town at Meadow Lane tomorrow afternoon.

The Magpies have drawn two of their opening three League games, and McParland is encouraging his players to add a more ruthless streak to their play.

Progress on the field compared to last term has pleased the Scot, but he knows victories are equally as crucial.

"I am happy with the way we've started," he explained.

"Things are progressing, but we do have to remember there's a long way to go.

"I am sure everyone who has watched us play can see we are progressing, but we have to get more ruthless.

"And that is in all areas of our game, not just in attack."

Paul Simpson's Shrews have started the campaign with three wins from three, matching the expectation placed upon their shoulders having splashed the cash in the summer on the likes of Grant Holt, Richard Walker and Graham Coughlan.

"Shrewsbury have spent a lot of money, that's right," said McParland.

"They've brought a few players in over the summer including Grant Holt from Nottingham Forest for a six-figure fee.

"He is a player who I know really well from my time over at Forest. He is a massive threat in this League, can score goals and is a handful."

McParland is waiting on the fitness of wing-wizard Myles Weston ahead of the game.

He said: "Myles has a slight muscle stiffness injury, and obviously we have Adam Nowland, Stephen Hunt and Gavin Strachan out as well.

"Russell Hoult is still progressing from his injury and he is a little sore after the other night.

"It was his first game back so he is still working his way back.

"It would be lovely to have everyone fit, but that is something we have to deal with."
