Points Please!

Posted on: Sat 16 Aug 2008

Ian McParland wants his Notts County side to follow up their Carling Cup upset against Doncaster Rovers with three points against Darlington tomorrow afternoon.

The extra-time victory over the Championship side on Tuesday was the perfect tonic after the opening day defeat at Bradford City.

And McParland is now eager to see his side claim their first points of the season in League Two.

"If we can go out and win the game on Saturday, then it has been a good start to the season," said McParland.

"We have to start getting points on the board now and turn the performances into results.

"I keep saying it, but we do have a tough start. Darlington will be up there, and then we have Luton away and then Shrewsbury here at Meadow Lane in our next two games.

"If we can get some sort of points total from those games and kick-on from there I will be delighted.

"So far we're going along nicely, but we have to get something out of Saturday's game."

And McParland admits there are decisions to be made all over the pitch as he prepares to name his starting XI for the game.

Goalkeeper Russell Hoult is closing in on a return to fitness after recovering from the stress fracture in his right leg and was on the bench against Doncaster in midweek.

And those who came in for starts against Doncaster have given the Manager a selection headache.

"We're nearly there in terms of numbers," explained McParland. "Russell is close now and there's only Hunty and Strach out and they're making progress.

"A decision you could say is close between Kevin Pilkington and Russell Hoult, but there are decisions all over the field to make.

"I was delighted with the lads who played at Bradford a week ago, and despite losing there were so many positives to come out of the game.

"I changed the team on Tuesday for the Doncaster game, and the lads who came in did really well - so there are decisions to be made all over the pitch."
