Frontmen Please Kevan

Posted on: Mon 21 Jul 2008

Strikers Jamie Forrester and Greg Pearson were amongst the goals last night in the Magpies' 4-1 friendly win over Wacker Burghausen, and Assistant Manager Dave Kevan was delighted for the duo.

Forrester notched a brace while Pearson scored one and created another as Notts came from behind to cruise to victory.

Notts struggled to hit the net on a regular basis last season, and while goals count for nothing in pre-season it is important the frontmen get in the groove early.

Clearly it is early days in pre-season, but the early signs are pleasing for Kevan.

He said after last night's game: "Obviously for three of the four goals to come from strikers, that is just what we want.

"I'm delighted for Jamie Forrester to get off the mark. It may only be pre-season, but it is always important for centre forwards to score goals and have chances.

"Jamie did well and took his goals very well, and Greg Pearson is also coming along nicely as well and a goal will have helped him as well.

"Greg makes some good runs and he did well to create our third goal with a great run down the right.

"He seems to find himself in that position a lot, and when he does get in those positions he keeps calm and always looks to pick a man out."

A 4-1 victory obviously looks convincing on paper, but Kevan admits results are not at the forefront of the management's mind.

Instead the focus is very much on the performances and fitness levels - both of which are being monitored very closely.

"The performance and the fitness levels are all we are worried about at this moment," admitted Kevan.

"In a way the results are irrelevant to us, but it is always nice to win. It's nice for the lads, and it does no harm to the morale in the camp.

"The attitude of the players has been first class through the whole trip, and that is very pleasing.

"There's a lot of things that the Manager has been working on with the players which has come through during the games - so to see what we are putting on in training sessions come through into the games is very pleasing."

The games may well be over in Austria, but the hard work continues for the squad with more tough training sessions to take place before the flight home on Saturday.

"We're in the middle of pre-season, so yes the games are finished over here but the training sessions will continue to be tough," said Kevan.

"The lads are aware of that, and as I said their attitude towards their work has been first class so if they can carry on with that same type of attitude we will remain very happy.

"Being a trip away for a week there has been some banter, but the lads have been sensible and that banter has been at the right times."
