Notts Claim Second Austrian Tour Win

Posted on: Mon 21 Jul 2008

Notts County claimed their second pre-season victory in three days this evening with a 4-1 victory over German side Wacker Burghausen.

New signing Jamie Forrester bagged two goals, while trialist Greg Pearson netted one and a Wacker player put through his own net as all five goals in the game came in the first half.

The Germans took the lead after eight minutes with a powerful drive from just inside the Magpies' box after a sweeping counter attack, just a few moments after Michael Johnson cleared off the line for the Magpies.

Greg Pearson and Jay Smith both came close to drawing Notts level and Matt Hamshaw crashed an effort against the woodwork before Forrester headed home at the far post on twenty-one minutes.

Twelve minutes later Notts took the lead as Greg Pearson burst away down the right to fire in a low cross which was diverted into his own net by a Wacker defender in off the near post.

It got better for Notts two minutes later as Forrester burst through on goal to fire low into the far corner from just inside the penalty box - and Pearson made it 4-1 on the stroke of half-time by converting a Hamshaw cross inside the six-yard box.

No goals followed in the second period after an all-action first half, but Notts continued to retain the ball well and keep their shape - to the satisfaction of Manager Ian McParland.

Forrester had a shot deflected just wide before being replaced just after the hour, while at the other end Kevin Pilkington was called into action to make a fine reaction stop late on.

Once again there was plenty to please McParland and his backroom team, as the players put into practise various drills and moves which have been worked on during pre-season on the training field.

As a precautionary measure Gavin Strachan, Adam Nowland and Spencer Weir-Daley all sat out the game due to minor knocks sustained in training.

The games may well be over now in Austria for the Magpies, but the hard work continues on the training field before the squad fly back on Saturday.

Notts Team: Pilkington, Beardsley, Tann, Johnson (Richards 46), Mayo, Hamshaw, Smith (MacKenzie 46), Butcher (Smith 56), Weston, Pearson (Fairclough 52), Forrester (Butcher 64).
