McParland Hurting After Defeat
Notts County Manager Ian McParland was left dismayed at seeing his side fall to a 1-0 defeat at Wrexham.
Neil Roberts' second-half secured all three points for the Dragons, and McParland felt that while chances came and went for the Magpies it was down to poor defending that his side left the Racecourse Ground with nothing.
"We had six or seven great chances, more than we've probably had in any other game this season," he said afterwards.
"But, the reason we lost the game was down to bad defending again.
"We had a player going to ground again and conceding a free-kick, and then we switched off for the delivery and the ball was in the back of the net.
"That is why we got nothing out of the game, because they were never going to score in a million years - and the only way they were going to was from a set-play, and they did that.
"I've talked about it before, a few weeks ago in fact, about defenders not staying on their feet."
With just two games to go and League Two safety still not yet secured, McParland still feels survival still may be hanging in the balance come the final day of the season at Chesterfield.
He has said so for some time, and he feels there's some steel missing in the camp to go and secure safety.
"I knew it would go to the wire, because we don't have the steel in the camp at the minute to carry it off," he said.
"I think it could go to the final day of the season at Chesterfield, but we need three points.
"The pressure might be on next week against Wycombe, but the pressure was on today and I told the players that and told them they could not relax for one second.
"I was watching the game and seeing chances go begging left, right and centre - and I could feel us getting done on the sucker punch.
"That is because we simply do not have that little bit in us to go and kill teams off and the ruthless killer touch on the field."
McParland felt that an early goal, or even the first-goal in Notts' favour, would have seen Wrexham crumble.
He said: "If we had got one goal, I think we would have got two or three goals because the first would have killed them off and their heads would have gone down.
"You would have put your money on Danny Crow when he went clear early on, but for the longer it goes on at 0-0 there's always a chance they could nick one from a set-play."
Over 600 Notts supporters made the journey to North Wales to support the Magpies, and McParland admits he feels for the Magpies faithful who made the trip to provide the team with fantastic support.
"I feel sorry for our supporters to be honest," said McParland.
"We had over 600 of them made their journey, and I want them to be able to go out on a Saturday night and enjoy themselves."
