Notts boss Steve Thompson has praised the attitude of defender Austin McCann for his attitude whilst out of the side, which earned him his first League start of the season at Darlington on Saturday.

The Scottish left-back was not selected for our opening two games of the League campaign with Paul Mayo given the nod at left-back, but at Darlington with Mayo playing in a more advanced role McCann returned to the fold with a typically solid and assured performance we've come to expect over the last year.

Thompson has labelled the former Hearts man as a 'fantastic professional' and also 'first class' in his work.

He said: "Football is a competitive game and you find out a lot about people when they are out of the team and how they respond.

"Austin has been first class. He is the first one in the gym to do weights and one of the first lads in for training, and he knows he has a battle on his hands for the left-back spot.

"We've had a chat about it and he is first class. He is an excellent professional, take it on the chin when he hasn't been in the team and get on with it and continue to work hard."

McCann will now be aiming to hold onto his spot for the home encounter with Morecambe this Saturday, while the defender's latest edition of his exclusive Blog on nottscountyfc.co.uk will be available on Wednesday to view.
