County's Plan To Add New Strength

Posted on: Fri 30 May 2008

Notts County Assistant Manager Dave Kevan explains to James Pallatt of the Nottingham Evening Post how the Magpies aim to add some attacking style to their squad.

Ian McParland's right-hand man believes there's plenty to build on from a defensive point of view, but scoring goals is a problem he and the Manager are keen to solve.

Notts County aim to add some attacking style to their defensive steel next season, says Dave Kevan.

The Magpies ended last season with the sixth-best defensive record in League Two, despite finishing in 21st place in the table.

They conceded 53 goals in 46 games, one less than both play-off finalists Stockport County and Rochdale.

But, with just 37 league goals, they had the worst strike-rate in the entire Football League.

Notts look set to have a strong defence again next season, having already signed linchpin Michael Johnson on a one-year deal.

Keeper Kevin Pilkington and key defender Mike Edwards also look set to sign new two-year deals at Meadow Lane.

Adam Tann, Stephen Hunt and Paul Mayo are also still under contract with the club.

But with Spencer Weir-Daley the only striker currently at the club, following the release of Jason Lee and Lawrie Dudfield at the end of last season, the Magpies plan to add more firepower.

Assistant-manager Kevan insists they will play more attack-minded football next season.

He said: "We are going to build on the strength and tightness of our back-four and goalkeeper, and add a bit more forward play to our game.

"We certainly have strength there, with the likes of Johnno, Pilks and hopefully Mike.

"There is a backbone to the team and we have to build on the one or two areas around that.

"We would like to try to introduce more forward-thinking football and see if we can take things on a stage further."
