Two injury-time goals from Scunthorpe's Paul Hayes sent Notts County out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at the First Round stage this evening.
Richard Butcher put Notts ahead with a fine volley on nine minutes and until the final minutes it looked as if the Magpies would dispose of their League One opponents.
Hayes equalised with a downward header at the far post in the first minute of injury time, and in the third minute he nodded home from a yard out after Russell Hoult had made a superb reaction save following a goalmouth scramble.
The home side hit the woodwork twice and were foiled by an excellent defensive showing from the Magpies, while Delroy Facey, Matt Hamshaw and Sean Canham all came close to increasing their lead.
But Hayes' late brace secured the win for the home side in dramatic style.
McParland tinkered with his starting line-up slightly for the First Round tie, handing a first start since signing from Team Bath in August to young striker Sean Canham. He also handed starts to Ben Fairclough, Russell Hoult and Adam Tann with Michael Johnson, Kevin Pilkington and Myles Weston dropping to the bench.
Former Scunthorpe frontman Jamie Forrester didn't travel with the Notts squad due to illness, missing out on a return to his old stomping ground.
In wet conditions at Glanford Park the Magpies got off to the perfect start - taking the lead after just nine minutes thanks to Richard Butcher.
The midfielder followed up his goal against Shrewsbury on Saturday with a superb left-foot volley from eighteen yards after some fine approach play by Notts.
A floated cross from Ben Fairclough down the left-hand side picked out Canham in the box, and his cushioned header into Butcher's path was expertly finished by last season's leading scorer.
Scunthorpe had a chance to draw level almost immediately, but frontman Ben May headed over from Grant McCann's in-swinging corner from six yards out.
Hoult was called inaction for the first time twenty minutes into proceedings, and in soggy conditions he did well to palm away Woolford's powerful effort from outside the area.
A minute later he was called upon again as he tipped a Grant McCann free-kick around the post.
Scunthorpe were desperate to draw level and Hoult pulled off another save from May's glancing header on twenty-five minutes, and the experienced campaigner watched a powerful Marcus Williams effort flash just over the bar two minutes later.
Long-range pot shots were all the home side could muster in the final fifteen minutes of the half as the home crowd grew increasingly frustrated at seeing their side behind.
Despite falling under pressure at times against the League One opponents Notts were looking solid as a unit and dangerous on the counter-attack, with Facey and Canham linking up well and Hamshaw and Fairclough providing pace and trickery on the wings.
With a little more luck Facey and Fairclough could have opportunities to burst clear on goal and notch their first Notts goals, but on the rain-soaked surface the ball skipped away from both on separate occasions.
In the second period the home side came within inches of drawing level, but on fifty minutes Matt Sparrow's pile-driver from thirty yards out crashed off the crossbar and behind for a goal-kick with Hoult beaten.
A last-ditch by Adam Tann, not for the first-time in the game, denied May from just a few yards out as the home side took the game to Notts in the early stages of the half. The Iron forced a number of corners, but were unable to make their pressure count.
Notts' defensive organisation was second to none, which meant despite being under pressure there was a real sense the rearguard would not be breached - and the determination on the faces of the likes of Tann and Edwards was clear to see.
The Magpies made an impressive foray forwards on the hour and within a matter of seconds saw two chances to extend their lead go begging. After some neat approach play by Facey Hamshaw was denied by Lillis' leg and the rebound from a tight angle from Canham was smothered by the Scunthorpe goalkeeper.
Ian McParland made a double change on seventy minutes by throwing winger Myles Weston and former Scunthorpe midfielder Neil MacKenzie into the action in place of the hardworking duo Ben Fairclough and Sean Canham.
Weston made an instant impact, gliding past Byrne down the left and delivering a cross to Facey which he glanced wide when well placed and unmarked inside the box. That would have wrapped up proceedings.
The Notts bench were convinced the striker's effort was destined for the back of the net with the subs and management team up on their feet - but it wasn't to be as the effort flashed just wide.
At the other end Scunthorpe were unable to enjoy the pressure they had piled on the Notts goal early in the half, and Ben May headed wide as time began to ebb away. Hoult was rarely called into action after a busy first half, and that owed a lot to the players in front of him who were putting in a terrific shift.
Iron sub Jonathan Forte cut inside from the right with ten minutes to go and drove a low effort at goal which clipped the foot of Hoult's near post, adding to the frustration of the home faithful and he drove just wide from a similar position a few moments later.
Myles Weston had a late shot saved as Notts caught the home side out on the counter attack, but between Butcher and Weston the opportunity was taken advantage of in an end-to-end last five minutes.
A late injury to defender Adam Tann was a blow to the Magpies, who left the field on the stretcher after colliding with Scunthorpe's May in the last minute with what seemed to be a facial injury - and that rocked the boat as the Iron drew level straight away with Paul Hayes heading home at the far post in the first minute injury time from a corner.
Moments later he delivered a second hammer blow as he nodded home from a few yards out to send the home fans wild after Hoult had made a superb save in a goalmouth scramble.
In a late finale Hoult went forwards for a corner and almost connected with Hamshaw's excellent delivery, but Notts couldn't get the equaliser.
Defeat maybe and in bitterly frustrating fashion, but make no mistake Notts' performance tonight was one to be proud of.
