Notts County pulled off a Carling Cup upset this evening at Meadow Lane by disposing of Championship side Doncaster Rovers in extra time thanks to Myles Weston's first-ever career goal.
Both sides had chances in normal time, with Gareth Roberts crashing a shot against the crossbar for the visitors while Neil MacKenzie and Mike Edwards both came close for the Magpies.
But one minute into the second period of extra-time, Notts bagged the winner. Sub Myles Weston, who was a complete nuisance all evening to the Doncaster defence after coming off the bench on the hour, played a neat one-two with Jay Smith and slammed the ball into the net to spark off wild celebrations and secure a Second Round berth.
Manager McParland made five changes to his side from the team that started at Bradford on Saturday with Matt Hamshaw, Jamie Forrester, Michael Johnson, Adam Nowland and Myles Weston all dropping to the bench to allow opportunities for Neil MacKenzie, Spencer Weir-Daley, Adam Tann, Jay Smith and new signing Ben Fairclough.
Rovers enjoyed the majority of the early possession in the driving Nottinghamshire rain, and only a fine fingertip save from Notts shot-stopper Kevin Pilkington denied Mark Wilson the opener from outside the box on six minutes.
On twenty-two minutes the visitors came even closer to breaking the deadlock, but Gareth Roberts' left-footed free-kick from outside the box crashed against the crossbar with Pilkington beaten.
Despite having the better of the chances in the early stages, the Magpies were more than holding their own against their Championship opponents and again using the ball effectively and spreading the play as often as possible.
And ten minutes before the interval Notts were almost rewarded with a goal, but the experienced Neil Sullivan turned Neil MacKenzie's free-kick from outside the box over the crossbar with the ball destined for the top corner of the former Scotland goalkeeper's net.
In the closing minutes of the half Paul Heffernan fired wide for the visitors as he looked to register a goal against his former employers, once again from outside the box which is what Rovers were restricted to throughout the half.
At the other end Jay Smith had a lob clawed away by Sullivan after his punch from Mayo's cross fell to the Notts midfielder on the edge of the box. Unfortunately for Smith, he just couldn't get enough on his first-time side-foot volley to guide the ball over Sullivan's outstretched arm.
The second period began with neither side giving anything away from a defensive point of view, and it took twelve minutes for the first shot of the half, but Kevin Pilkington was equal to Spicer's low drive from just inside the box after bursting into the area from the right.
Both sides made attack-minded changes around the hour mark as they went for the prize of a place in the Second Round of the competition, with Northern Ireland International Stuart Elliott coming off the bench for Rovers while Myles Weston entered the fray soon afterwards in place of Weir-Daley.
Ben Fairclough had Magpies fans off the edge of their seats on sixty-six minutes, but after latching onto Facey's flick-on and bursting in on goal a last-gasp sliding challenge by Hird did enough to ensure Fairclough couldn't get a clean strike at goal and the ball rolled into Sullivan's arms. It was Fairclough's last involvement on his Magpies debut, as he was replaced by Hamshaw a minute later.
Weston's arrival had the crowd buzzing with excitement as he set off on two mazy runs down the left within the first two minutes of being on the pitch, beating his man on both occasions and providing crosses into the box. On the third occasion moments later it was almost third time lucky for the Magpies, but Facey headed over when rising highest in the area as Notts took control.
Rovers managed to weather the storm thrown at them by the Magpies, but they weren't able to exert too much pressure on the Notts backline. Again their best chances were coming from long range, with substitute Woods driving just wide five minutes from time.
Sean Canham replaced Delroy Facey in the dying minutes as the former Team Bath frontman was handed his home debut before an appreciative home crowd who were almost celebrating a winning goal two minutes from time but Mike Edwards drove just over with his left foot from Neil MacKenzie's lobbed to the far post.
That was the final opportunity of normal time as Referee Mr Oliver blew for full-time, signalling another 30 minutes of action in the form of extra time. Despite an entertaining period of play in which Notts produced some exciting football, neither side were able to threaten the opposition goal.
But one minute into the second period the Magpies broke the deadlock, with Myles Weston slamming home his first ever career goal. The lively winger played a one-two with Jay Smith before advancing into the box and slamming a left-foot drive beyond Sullivan and into the back of the net.
He set off in celebration sliding on his knees after bagging the first goal of his career he was so desperate to score.
The confidence was oozing in Notts' play with the Championship side rocked by the winger's composed finish.
By his own admission McParland felt it would have been a big upset if his side had pulled off a result tonight - and his players did just that, stepping forward manfully to dispose of a Championship outfit with some excellent football.
Meadow Lane was buzzing......long may it continue.
