John Thompson's last minute strike ensured Notts County ended the season with a 2-1 victory at Wycombe Wanderers.
County led 1-0 at the break thanks to John Thompson's first goal for the club but Wycombe got back on level terms through David McCracken before Thompson took centre stage with twenty seconds left to curl a shot into the far corner from long range - but Wycombe were still promoted on goal difference.
Ian McParland handed starts to Sean Canham, Ben Fairclough and Stephen Hunt at Adams Park, with the latter of the two pushing for new contracts with County.
Gavin Strachan was the only player from the five who were told they would be released by Notts in the summer who started.
Youngster Alex Troke again travelled with the team but didn't make the squad.
In glorious sunshine at a packed Adams Park expecting promotion to League One the home side kicked off.
Wycombe forced a corner in the seventh minute but Zebroski's weak effort was easily saved by Pilkington.
The home faithful were in full voice early on and the stadium was a cauldron of noise.
County's first effort came on twelve minutes but Phil Picken dragged his shot off target.
A drifted ball in by Edwards picked out Canham in a good position on sixteen minutes but he didn't get any direction on the header and he put the ball way off target.
The home sections seemed to get rather twitchy after County enjoyed a decent spell of possession by the twenty minute mark and a low ball into the Wycombe box by Weston caused havoc before Young eventually got hold of the ball.
On thirty minutes Adams Park was stunned into silence when County took the lead through skipper John Thompson.
A neat passing move by Notts worked the ball to the Irishman in the middle of the park and he let fly from all of thirty yards and the swerving ball had Young in all sorts of bother and he made a complete mess of the effort and the ball trickled into the net.
Confidence was oozing back into the County side after a poor run of recent results and Weston nearly doubled the lead but his shot across Young was just off target.
Woodman's free-kick down Pilkington's throat on forty minutes was the first effort on target for the home side but the save was fairly routine.
Some fine close control and an eventual volley by Sawyer almost brought the home side level two minutes before the interval but the ball fizzed just over.
Wycombe stepped up the pressure again before half time and Hunt was on duty inside the six-yard box to hack Zebroski's cross-shot away.
With just one minute added on County rode the pressure and went into the dressing room a goal to the good.
Pilkington made the first save of the second half from Doherty who tried his luck from roughly the same distance as Thompson did in the first half but he didn't fare quite as well.
Pittman volleyed wide two minutes later with Wycombe looking like they were given a good talking to at the break by Manager Peter Taylor.
On fifty-two the home side eventually drew level, this time it was the turn of Wycombe's Captain - David McCracken - to get on the scoresheet.
A short free-kick by Holt to Doherty perfectly picked out Zebroski's run into the box and his cross was turned in at the near post by McCracken to send the home fans into raptures.
Gavin Strachan's Notts County career came to an end on fifty-eight minutes when he was replaced by Matt Richards for his County debut on loan from, ironically, Wycombe.
Another player with Wycombe connections in the past - Delroy Facey - replaced Sean Canham just after the hour.
A superb last ditch challenge by Edwards stopped Akinde getting a shot away to give the home side on sixty-five and he earned a warm round of applause from the County faithful for a solid piece of defending.
County's final change of the game saw Adam Tann replace Ben Fairclough twenty minutes from time.
Wycombe were a little more reserved in the latter stages and weren't looking to leave space at the back, and were quite content to sit on the point they had to secure promotion.
County ended with a flurry of corners but they couldn't get the winner they were chasing, but still came away with a more than creditable point.
And that came back to haunt them when Thompson netted a second for County with twenty seconds left when he curled a superb left-foot shot past Young and into the far corner.
It sent County fans wild and was a welcome reward for their excellent support during the season.
Four minutes were added on and Wycombe quickly sought a second goal, but County didn't want to let this lead slip.
Notts will now begin a summer of restructuring on the playing side to build a squad capable of finishing much higher up the League Two table next time around.
