Top goal-scorers (10-6)

Posted on: Tue 10 Nov 2009

Notts County have had some extraordinary strikers down the years. Flicking through the record books, names such as Tony Hateley, Tommy Lawton and Mick Vinter spring to mind.

Here is the official list of the World's Oldest Football League Club's record goal-scorers. Read on to find out who finds themselves in tenth to sixth position.

10(equal): Mark Stallard
Goals: 79 (69 league goals)
Seasons: 1998-2005

'Stal' won the Player of the Year award on two different occasions and was the club's top-scorer three times.

In the 2000/01 season he scored 24 goals and a couple of years later went one better - hitting the net 25 times.

He had excellent ball control and could finish off a move sublimely. Notts fans will remember his goal against Wigan on January 1, 2003 where he delicately chipped the ball over John Filan and his cheeky solo effort against Cheltenham in September 28, 2002.

After each goal the Magpies' support sang proudly: "Walking in a Stallard Wonderland".

10 (equal): Trevor Christie
Goals: 79 (63 league goals)
Seasons: 1979-1984

Signed from Leicester City, Christie only missed one game in his first season at Meadow Lane. The striker scored nine goals in 1980 as the team finished 17th in Division Two.

He earned the fans support and will always be remembered as a terrace hero. His second year saw the Magpies promoted after finishing runners-up. Christie topped the charts with 14 goals, including four in the last four league games.

He also enjoyed a fine season in the top flight, scoring 12 goals. His strike partner Iain McCulloch netted 16 as Notts finished 15th.

They attained the same position the following season and Christie didn't quite make it into double figures, netting nine goals. The strong attacker's final year at the Lane saw him score 19 goals - his best return for the club - but, despite finishing top-scorer again, Notts were relegated.

10 (equal): Gary Lund
Goals: 79 (63 league goals)
Seasons: 1987-1995

Lund will always be remembered for his goal against Manchester City in the 1991 FA Cup. His strike in the dying seconds set up a plum tie against Tottenham Hotspur live on BBC Television.

Lund spent eight-and-a-half years at the club. His first season, in 1988, saw the Magpies finish fourth in Division Three. The tall striker scored 20 goals at a rate of one in every two games, including a hat-trick against Rotherham United at Meadow Lane.

The following season he was top-scorer with eight as Notts finished ninth. Under Neil Warnock the Magpies managed back-to-back play-off promotions and Lund's goals in both seasons assured top flight status.

9: Harry Daft
Goals: 81 (58 league goals)
Seasons: 1885-1895

Daft scored on his debut against Sheffield on March 7, 1885. The following season he partnered Harry Cursham and Harry Jackson upfront and together they scored a remarkable 60 goals.

The Lambs, as they were then nicknamed, played their games at Trent Bridge and regularly came out of them triumphant.

Local rivals Nottingham Forest were thumped 5-0, Derby County were thrashed 7-3 and Lincoln 4-0.

One particular match saw an 11-3 score-line against Wellingborough GS. In 1888, the year the Football League was formed, Daft scored eight goals in 19 games as Notts finished 11th.

8: Ian McParland
Goals: 90 (69 league goals)
Seasons: 1980-1989

McParland's first goal for the Magpies came against Manchester United on the final day of the 1982/83 season when he helped the side to a 3-2 victory.

The Scottish striker went on to become the club's top goal-scorer for three years on the bounce, between 1986 and 1989. He scored 15, 24 and 21 goals respectively.

His record included three hat-tricks against Port Vale, Fulham and Mansfield Town in the Littlewoods Challenge Cup.

7: Tom Johnston
Goals: 92 (88 league goals)
Seasons: 1948-1957

Imagine having three players who scored above twenty goals in a season and only finishing 11th in the league. That was the case in 1949 when Tommy Lawton (20), Jackie Sewell (26) and Johnston (24) all found the net consistently.

Johnston was a key player for the Magpies but was overlooked a little due to his striking team-mates. The Scot had a lethal shot and hit two hat-tricks in consecutive matches - Crystal Palace and Watford in 1949.

He also took part in the 11-1 victory against Newport County where he netted a brace.

6: Don Masson
Goals: 97 (92 league goals)
Seasons: 1968-1982

Masson is widely known as one of the most gifted, if not the most gifted player, to wear the famous black and white stripes. He controlled the Notts midfield for over 400 games.

The Scottish International was bought along with Bob Worthington for £7,000 - one of the best pieces of business Meadow Lane has ever witnessed. He started brilliantly by scoring on his debut against Darlington and continued to finish as top-scorer with 13 goals. He was later made captain and was an integral part of the Jimmy Sirrel years.

In 1970 he was once again the leading marksman with 23 goals and the following season saw him score 14. In 1972 he only missed one game and scored 11 goals, including four penalties.

1973 saw him secure his second Magpies promotion, where his tally of eight goals helped to lift Notts into Division Two. The next season he scored 11 times and the side finished in a respectable tenth place.
