Blog: Near Death Experience

Posted on: Mon 19 Jul 2010

A final blog entry from Multimedia Editor Dane Vincent, rounding up the final days in Austria.

Now we're back in the country, I thought I'd round off a hectic week with one final entry…

If you're wondering what the title of the article is about, it relates to our trip to Hallein, where the side took on Arka Gdynia in the final friendly of the tour.

The roads in Austria are pretty narrow and about 30 minutes into our journey we were faced by a maniac lorry driver.

Not only was he shifting at an alarming rate, he was halfway onto our side of the road!

Fortunately, he swerved out the way at the last moment, though most of us were bracing ourselves - nervous shouts of 'whoa' all around.

Later in the week we had another scare during a team bonding activity - white water rafting.

I took a seat in the management staff boat and thanks a lack of water - due to the hottest summer in 54 years out there - we took a few heavy bumps along the way.

During one of these the boat almost flipped and Dave Kevan actually fell out of the raft.

Time stood still as we looked around for him but fortunately, after what seemed like an eternity, he resurfaced gasping for air, sporting an almighty bruise on his back.

Sighs of relief circulated all around but it certainly brought a few laughs around the camp later in the day.

I've written before about the banter flying about within the group and on the final night, it was at it's finest.

It's a dressing room law that everyone new to the team has to sing a song.

With plenty of new faces knocking about, there was lots of variety to the entertainment…

A few of the highlights included Craig Short singing the Hungarian version of I Am The Music Man, Rob Burch gave us a lovely rendition of Like A Virgin by Madonna and Kevin Smith had everyone singing along to the Proclaimers.

As it was my first trip, too, I was called upon by Hughesy and duly obliged with my 'finest' Johnnie Cash impersonation, with Ring Of Fire.

Overall the trip was a great experience and you could tell that stronger bonds had been formed throughout the week, helped by activities like the aforementioned.

Everyone's feeling positive on the back of it, so let's hope we can take it into the new season and pick up where we left off. Come on you 'Pies!

More footage from Austria will follow on Magpie Player shortly.
