One of my earliest experiences of seeing Notts County become the victims of a cup upset extend back to the murky days 1978.

On Wednesday, August 30, we visited Fourth Division Crewe Alexandra for a second round League Cup tie.

At the time, we were a well positioned Second Division club, whilst Alexandra were regularly scrapping for their Football League lives.

Having arrived at what could only be described as a very bleak and uncompromising Gresty Road, rain and all, we were subjected to watching an uninspiring 2-0 loss.

We never got out of the starting blocks and the only saving grace was that the away end overlooked Crewe station, so more interest was directed over the wall, rather than on the pitch - maybe to plan an escape!

Leaving there after the game, our driver got hopelessly lost and we were soon heading towards Chester.

Finally managing to realise the error, we arrived home sometime after 2am, miserable and tired.

As for the forthcoming game, I always view Crewe as a rather unpredictable side and one that are always hard to beat at home.

Adding to that we have no Lee Hughes and, therefore, I will predict a hard-fought 1-1 draw.
