Happy Birthday Meadow Lane - 100 Today!

Posted on: Fri 03 Sep 2010

The 2009/2010 season was arguably one of the most exciting, interesting and memorable year in the club's history.

One of the most exciting summers began with then Chairman John Armstrong Holmes announced that an ambitious Middle Eastern was set to buy the club in a multi-million pound deal.

The Supporters Trust handed over their 60% ownership, with a 814 to 55 majority voting for the takeover to go ahead.

Munto Finance agreed a deal on June 4. A statement read that Peter Trembling and Peter Willett joined the board with immediate effect.

The takeover was made official on July 14.

Notts quickly made their intentions known with marquee signings of Sol Campbell and Kasper Schmeichel.

However arguably the most exciting and jaw dropping was when former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson was confirmed as the Club's Director of Football.

Sven-Goran Eriksson

Only the Tommy Lawton signing in the late 1940s could compare with such a signing.

The opening day match will be something the fans will never forget. A perfect day.

Striker Lee Hughes scoring a hat-trick, whilst influential midfielder Ben Davies headed the first and on-loan full-back Brendan Moloney capped a miserable day for the visitors.

A week later Notts made it nine goals in two matches, with a 4-0 away win against Macclesfield Town.

A sunny evening in Chesterfield saw Notts lose controversially with referee handing the home side two penalties. Centre back Mike Edwards scored a consolation goal in a 2-1 defeat.

Notts were back in fine form with Schmeichel marking his debut with a clean sheet. Goals from Hughes, Karl Hawley and Johnnie Jackson wrapped up the three points.

The Magpies lost to Barnet in the final minute before collecting another four points at the Lane.

Notts hit five again as they disposed Northampton Town 5-2, Hughes scoring his second hat-trick.

The following week saw Campbell's only match, a defeat to Morecambe. Keeper Kasper was inches away to claim a point with a fantastic scissor kick.

Lee Hughes and Neal Bishop

Notts home form was again fantastic, Hughes scoring a brace as the side eased past Port Vale at Meadow Lane 3-1.

Striker Luke Rodgers scored the quickest goal of the campaign within 14 seconds at Sincil Bank, Lincoln. The former Vale attacker went onto score a treble as Notts continued their fine early season form.

October brought four draws as Manager Ian McParland left the club after a 2-2 result against Torquay shown on Sky Sports.

Dave Kevan and Michael Johnson was put in charge and they claimed a vital point away to Rotherham United and got a further three points against Crewe with goals from Rodgers and Jackson.

Schmeichel kept out another penalty and was rewarded with another clean sheet.

New manager Hans Backe first game in charge saw a late Graeme Lee header to rescue a point at the Lane infront of 7,562 fans.

Notts failed to win another league match until December.

Instead picking up points against Bury (thanks to a muddy goalmouth) and Aldershot.

The side also lost to promotion rivals Rochdale on a wet and miserable Tuesday night in Lancashire.

The team made amends with a thumping 4-0 win against bottom side Darlington, including an exquisite lob by Hughes. Notts were up to 6th with a goal difference of plus 22.

On December 12, Peter Trembling had completed a manager buy-out from Munto, hours before Notts lost there one and only home match against Accrington Stanley.

This was to be Backe's final match and Dave Kevan returned as caretaker manager.

The winter campaign was severely reduced thanks to the December weather, so Notts next placed against Burton. Hughes again scored a hat-trick, netting his third from the spot infront of a large and vocal Notts support.

The New Year brought a transfer embargo, but Sven remained as rumours regarding the financial situation continued.

Notts again wrapped up wins against Dagenham, Barnet and Grimsby before it was all change in the boardroom again.

Ray Trew and James Rodwell

Successful local businessman Ray Trew assumed control of the club on February 11. Both Trembling and Sven left, although the Swede was given the Joint Life President title.

The new chairman decided not to put the club into administration, which won great support from fans.

Back in the league Kevan's amazing form continued, especially with a small squad. Draws against Grimsby and Aldershot brought vital points. The squad could have easily squandered points with so many matches in a short space of time.

The new board put former Burnley manager Steve Cotterill in charge and his reign couldn't have started better.

A 5-0 thumping Hereford with Westcarr netting a hatrick and Rodgers scoring a brace.

Oh and another clean sheet for Kasper.

The match started an astonishing run which gave the club the league title.

Victories against Macclesfield, a classy 3-0 away win at Accrington and a vital 1-0 win over local rivals Chesterfield saw the club climb the table.

The whole of the football league was grieving when it was announced that Macclesfield manager Keith Alexander passed away shortly after the match at Meadow Lane. He is still greatly missed by all.

One of the most vital wins came at Meadow Lane. Notts faced Rotherham and it seemed it was to end 0-0, but striker Luke Rodgers had different ideas. He pounced on a long ball and lashed in a clinical strike to claim the three points in front of 9-thousand fans.

Steve Cotterill

Notts were back amongst the goals with another 5-0 win, this time Bury was on the other hand of the demolishen. Then away victories against Shrewsbury and Northampton brought Notts closer to the top.

They reached the summit with another home win. Fans favourite Delroy Facey scoring the third, his cult status was recognised with a special day named in his honour in March.

Promotion was sealed when Morecambe visited the Lane. Over 8-thousand supporters saw midfielder Ricky Ravenhill score a screamer as the thoughts now went on to seal the Championship.

10,536 fans crammed into Meadow Lane to see Keith Hill's Rochdale face the Magpies. Surely the winner of the game would go on and claim the trophy. There was only goal - from the brilliant Lee Hughes.

The goal was among the best he scored all season. His finish was sublime.

Champions!

Cotterill lost his first Notts match away to in-form Port Vale 2-1, but the title was secured three days later.

The venue was the Northern Echo Arena, Darlington and Notts hit five again. Defender Mike Edwards arguably scoring the best of the bunch with a fantastic bicycle kick.

Notts captain John Thompson raised the trophy after another 5-0 thrashing. This time it was Cotteril's former side Cheltenham Town.Thousand of Notts fans then visited Torquay for a brilliant weekend in by the southern coast.

Notts ended top, ten points clear of second-placed Bournemouth and a fantastic +65.

The Magpies also enjoyed success in the cup. They beat Bradford, Bournemouth, Forest Green before facing Premiership Wigan Athletic in a tasty looking tie at Meadow Lane.

Stephen Hunt

Hughes and Davies scored twice before the Premiership class shone through and Wigan brought Notts back to there place for a replay.

However it was the Magpies who got through to the fifth round with a 2-0 win. Defender Stephen Hunt scored first before an own goal set up a famous and historic cup win.

New Chairman Trew's first game saw amazing support from the Magpies. Around 5,000 fans travelled to Craven Cottage for the FA Cup fifth round tie against Fulham.

It was another highlight of an incredible season.

Sadly Notts lost to Doncaster in the Carling Cup at the first attempt, as well as losing to Bradford in the JPT on penalties.

The 2009/2010 season will never be forgotten.
