September 2: 2008/2009 (2 Days To Go)

Posted on: Thu 02 Sep 2010

After a relegation battle last season Notts fans expected a higher finish this time round under Ian McParland.

Charlie handed Jason Beardsley, Matt Hamshaw, Jamie Forrester, Delroy Facey and Adam Nowland made there debuts on the opening day defeat to Bradford City, but three days later Notts beat

Championship side Doncaster Rovers 1-0 in the League Cup.

Sub winger Myles Weston raced through and scored in the 106th minute to send Notts through to face Wigan, where they sadly lost 4-0.

Despite there cup exploits Notts failed to register a win until they faced Aldershot Town at Meadow Lane.

A day which will be most remember as a game where thousands of Notts fans remembered the most famous manager in Notts County's history.

Michael Johnson celebrates his goal with Danny Crow and Richard Butcher

With the loss of ex-manager Jimmy Sirrel, the pre-match events were a time where all at Meadow Lane could show their support and appreciation for a man that was a key figure in County's history.

A minutes applause before kick was fitting, with The Kop in full voice and ex players and colleagues at pitch side, Meadow Lane paid their respect to the late Sirrel.

The Shots took the lead before defender Michael Johnson rose highest and netted the equalizer. With seconds to go Richard Butcher scored the winner. The thousands in the Kop went wild. A win for Sir Jimmy. His name is still sung regularly at Meadow Lane.

Notts netted back-to-back wins with a win when they beat Port Vale 2-1. Goals from Jamie Forrester and Weston.

Six more matches passed before Notts notched up another win. This time in the FA Cup, sadly Notts were dumped out again by non-league opposition. This time in the replay Kettering Town beat Notts.

The team were inconsistent again. Beating Barnet 4-0 with Jonathan Forte scoring a treble before they lost to Dagenham 6-1 both away from the Lane.

Tributes to Jimmy Sirrel on the Main Gates

Notts continued to grind out results, which kept the team further away from the dreaded relegation zone.

Victories against Barnet, Bradford and Bournemouth were much needed, before Charlie's team suffered a dip in form.

Five loses in April pushed Notts six points away from relegation, luckily there was only three points to play for.

The pressure was off and the Magpies travelled down to Wycombe who had already been promoted.

John Thompson scored a brace to give Notts fans hope for next season. Another disappointing year at Meadow Lane, hopefully Charlie could re-build for a more promising term next season.

Position: 19th in League Two.

Top scorer: Fans favourite Delroy Facey scored nine times in the league.

Did you know in 2008: Team GB competed at Olympics in Beijing and the team won 19 gold, 13 silver and 15 bronze medals finishing 4th in the medal table - the best performance for the Great Britain team in a century.
