After two mid-table finishes the previous years, Notts finished their highest league position since 1928/1929. Notts also enjoyed one of the greatest cup shocks in the club's history.
Lead by a powerful forward Les Bradd and the Scottish enigma Ian Scanlon, the club scored 60 league goals - the highest total since gaining promotion from Division Three.
The side were also aided by central defenders Brian Stubbs and Dave Needham who played 80 matches between them.
Notts travelled to Gibraltar for a pre-season tour and came home triumphant. Claiming a victory and a draw against Fulham and Scottish side St Mirren.
The tour helped with the club's opening fixtures as the Magpies remained unbeaten until late September.
Victories against Charlton, Carlisle United, York City, Luton Town and Hull City set Notts in great shape.
However the two points that gave the club's fans the greatest pleasure was when Les Bradd scored at the City Ground in a 1-0 win in front of 19,757 fans.
However despite such a great start, Notts were shocked when manager Jimmy Sirrel resigned in mid-October. The Scot went to Sheffield United, while Ron Fenton took the role at Meadow Lane.
Notts biggest victory came against Oldham Athletic on Dec 27 at Meadow Lane. The team thrashed the Owls 5-1 with 'bomber' Bradd and Super Scan scoring twice.
The next match saw another comprehensive win, 4-0, over York City with Steve Sims scoring a double.
Notts also won the next two, Carlisle United 2-1 and Plymouth Argyle 3-1, as the side stormed up the division, within sight of gaining promotion.
Unfortunately the club's chances were dealt a blow when they suffered four back-to-back defeats in March.
The end of the season saw the Magpies remain undefeated for seven matches including a 4-0 mauling of Fulham at Meadow Lane with Tristen Benjamin scoring a goal in only his second appearance.
The good run unfortunately didn't merit a promotion as the side finished seven points off top spot.
The Magpies did enjoy a very successful FA Cup run, which ended in the fifth round. Notts beat Sunderland 2-1, Leeds 1-0 and Everton 2-0 in a replay at Meadow Lane.
The victory at Leeds still is one of the most famous cup matches in the club's history. The Yorkshiremen had reached the European Cup Final only months before as Notts were given little hope of even gaining a replay at Elland Road.
County hung onto a goal-less draw until half-time before strikers Bradd and Scanlon missed chances before Super Scan headed home an unbelievable winner. One of the biggest shocks in the FA Cup in the 1970s.
After his quick-fire hat-trick against Sheffield Wednesday last term, he had secured his name in Notts County history.
The side were then knocked out by the other Magpies, Newcastle United, 1-0 in front of over 31-thousand fans.
Position: 5th in Division Two
Top scorer: Notts County all time goalscorer Les Bradd finished top of the pile with 16 goals in 42 league appearances. He also scored three times in the FA Cup run.
Did you know in 1975: On 19 September the first episode of the popular sitcom Fawlty Towers is broadcast on BBC Television.
