Youth Team Clinch First Victory

16 September 2013

Notts County youth team recorded their first points of the season with a 3-1 win against local rivals Chesterfield.

Three goals in the opening 30 minutes put the young Magpies in the driving seat.

Elliott Hodge opened the scoring in the first minute with a confident penalty down the centre.

Anthony Dwyer then doubled Notts’ lead with a well-taken finish, after a lay-off from Alex Kenlock.

Kieran Geldenhuys wrapped up County’s scoring when he placed home at close range following a goalkeeping error.

Chesterfield hit back late on but it was not enough to prevent Notts from adding points to the table.

Head of Academy coaching Andy McMillan was pleased to see his side finally rewarded for their hard work.

He told the official site: “We’ve played really well in the other games and got nothing out of them, but this was a scrappy game and we went 3-0 up in the first half and managed to allow them only one goal.

“The lads are buzzing and they knew they didn’t play that well but there’s times where you’ve just got to grind out results.

“I think they were quite anxious to get the three points and it showed towards the end, because mistakes were being made and they weren’t passing the ball

“But, I’m pleased for them because the players and the staff have worked incredibly hard to get the win and we deserved it, I think.

“There’s no game this weekend but it will allow us to do some more training with them through the week.

“We’ll work them really hard, but the confidence should be up and there’s no reason why we can’t travel up to Hartlepool next week and deliver another decent performance.”
