#themag: First Game I Looked To

21 August 2012

Former Pools man to head up tonight’s edition of #themag…

Gary Liddle cannot wait to take on his former club in tonight’s npower League 1 clash at Meadow Lane.

Liddle joined Notts in the summer after departing Victoria Park, where he had spent the previous six years.

The midfielder, who is expected to feature at centre-back after taking up the role in the weekend’s victory over Crewe Alexandra, spoke the club’s official matchbook ahead of the big game.

Although looking forward to seeing a few familiar faces, Liddle says his full focus will be on three points as soon as the first whistle blows.

“This was the first game that I looked to,” he told #themag. “I was speaking to Scotty Flinders from there and we were saying that it was always going to happen this early on in the season.

“I’m hoping for a good reaction because I always got along well with the fans.

“It’s an exciting one and if I can be a part of the team today then it’ll be great.

“I think they always appreciated how hard I worked and I did spend five or six years there.

“The response from Hartlepool fans has always been good.

“It’ll be good to give them a clap but if I did score I wouldn’t not celebrate. Of course I’d celebrate.”

He continued: “What I do know is that it’s going to be a very tough match.

“I know each player inside out and I know what to expect from them.

“They defend well and they’ve got players in attack who can cause you problems.

“They’re a good team - a very stubborn team - and if we can get a result against them then that will be great.”
