Tempest: This Means Everything To Me

25 March 2013

Promising youngster Greg Tempest is honoured to be representing a club so close to his family’s heart.

The midfielder made his first senior appearance for the Magpies in last weekend’s 1-0 win over Scunthorpe United and was a surprise inclusion in the starting 11 for Saturday’s clash with high-flying Swindon Town.

Over 60 minutes, Tempest looked composed in possession and gave a good account of himself against a strong Robins outfit.

Tempest’s grandfather, Bill Corkhill, made 284 league appearances for Notts either side of the Second World War and the 19-year-old’s aim has been to follow in his footsteps.

“It means everything to me, my mum and even my dad, because I never met my grandad,” he said.

“All the stories I hear about him are always positive so to make my debut at a club he used to play for, words can’t describe it.

“It’s unbelievable how it’s come around and I’m overwhelmed, as well as last week when I made my debut at Scunthorpe.

“My grandad was the manager of Scunthorpe so it was a weird coincidence but I’m just doing it for him really.”

Tempest signed for Notts as a youth team scholar at the age of 16, after leaving the Mansfield Town Academy.

Following two years in the under-18s, the playmaker was rewarded with a professional deal in the summer.

Now that he has been given an opportunity, he is determined to succeed and pay back everyone that has had a hand in his development.

“Mick Leonard took me on and gave me that chance and ever since then Michael Johnson and Brett Adams have pushed me on,” he said.

“I’d like to give them a lot of credit but also Chris [Kiwomya], the gaffer, as well for giving me this chance.

‘I’d like to think that he’s always believed in me and I’m going to keep on pushing for the team.

“I’m still young and hopefully it’s onwards and upwards for me here.”
