NCS (National Citizen Service) is a once–in-a-lifetime opportunity open to all Year 11 and 12 students.
It’s great fun and a fantastic way to build the skills and experiences needed to help young people stand out in job and university applications. They’ll take on new challenges and adventures, making new friends, learning new skills and giving something back to their community.Along with thousands of other people their age across Nottinghamshire, they’ll spend time away from home doing outdoor challenges, meeting new people and building their confidence. They’ll build skills with local businesses and charities, whether that’s interview skills or first aid, or learning about issues in their community. Using all their new skills they’ll also create their own community project to benefit your local area. At the end of it they’ll graduate at a special ceremony and receive a certificate signed by the Prime Minister to recognise their achievements.
NCS is valued by employers and universities – it’s recognised by UCAS and looks great on CVs. Plus, it’s great fun – they’ll make life-long friends and develop their confidence. Over 98% of those who took part in the programme last year would recommend it to their friends and 92% of participants said that they’d developed more skills for the future.
Jochebel MacCarthy did NCS last summer: “I have learnt so much, experienced great things, I am more prepared for when I go to University and my CV looks great – I have no idea why young people wouldn’t want to do NCS! I had such a great time, I was doing things I had never done before, I was making new friends and having fun.”
NCS runs during the school holidays across a range of dates during the summer holidays, or during the October and February half terms. Because NCS is backed by the government, NCS costs only £50, covering all accommodation, transport and meals (during the residential phase), activities and equipment. Bursaries are also available and support can be provided for young people with additional needs.
